Huskers Come Up Short Against Terps

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska baseball team (20-23, 4-10 Big Ten) dropped the series opener against Maryland, 15-7, at Hawks Field on Friday night.

Jesse Wilkening led the Husker offense with a 4-for-5 performance, tying his career high for hits in a game. Brison Cronenbold also produced a multi-hit outing by going 2-for-2.

The Terrapins built a 3-0 lead after two innings with one run in the top of the first and two runs in the top of the second. They added one run in the top of the third, but Nebraska responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 4-2. After Cronenbold drew a leadoff walk, Mojo Hagge tripled to drive him in. Scott Schreiber’s sacrifice fly brought in Hagge.

After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, the Terps scored two runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 6-2. In the seventh inning, Maryland scored five runs before NU scored twice in the bottom half of the frame. Cronenbold hit a one-out single and then scored when Schreiber reached on an error. Wilkening doubled to bring in Schreiber. The pair of runs made the score 11-4 through seven innings.

UMD tacked on four runs in the top of the eighth to build a 15-4 advantage. In the bottom of the ninth, Luke Roskam smashed a three-run home run after Schreiber and Wilkening reached with no outs. It marked Roskam’s fifth home run of the season.

NU’s starting pitcher, Matt Waldron, went 6.0 innings and recorded a career-high eight strikeouts. The Huskers saw relief appearances from Mike Waldron, Byron Hood, Ethan Frazier and Max Schreiber.

The series between Nebraska and Maryland continues on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. (CT).
