Lincoln - The Nebraska women’s tennis team is the No. 6 seed in the 2018 Women's Big Ten Tennis Championships, as the tournament will be held at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Huskers (18-6, 7-4 Big Ten) are slotted to take on No. 3 seed Illinois (20-4, 8-3 Big Ten) on Friday, April 27, at 4:30 p.m. (CT).
The Big Red, who are No. 46 nationally in the latest Oracle/ITA rankings, closed the regular season with three straight wins to move into a three-way tie for fourth place with Ohio State and Purdue. The Huskers secured 4-0 sweeps of both Iowa (April 14) and Wisconsin (April 20) before closing the regular season with a 4-3 victory over tournament host Minnesota on Sunday. Nebraska’s fourth-place conference finish and No. 6 tournament seed is the team's best Big Ten finish since sharing the regular-season title in 2013.
The Huskers did not play Illinois in regular season action. The last time Nebraska faced the Fighting Illini was in 2017 at the Dillon Tennis Center, where the Big Red took home a 4-2 win. Returners Claire Reifeis, Hayley Haakenstad, Paula Del Cueto Castillo and Vasanti Shinde all nabbed wins in the victory over the Fighting Illini.
The Big Ten women’s tennis conference championships are scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 26, with dual matches featuring No. 8 seed Minnesota versus No. 9 seed Maryland (10 a.m.) and No. 7 seed Michigan State versus No. 10 seed Indiana (12:30 p.m.). Action will continue over the weekend on Friday and Saturday, with the championship match scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 29, at Noon.
