Nebraska Football
Pre-Spring Press Conference
Wednesday, March 14, 2018
Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, Neb.)
Junior Defensive Lineman Carlos Davis
On the biggest change with the defense:
“Systematically, it’s different, but it’s still 3-4 defense. You guys just have to wait and see the difference. I can’t really say too much about it yet.”
On if winter workouts were as strenuous as people have said:
“Yes, they were. You guys will only know that if you were there, but we grew a lot as a team and we got stronger. We definitely lost body fat and gained muscle. It was probably the best offseason I’ve had.”
On the toughest part of winter workouts:
“I’m not sure if the previous players mentioned it, but it was just the metabolic workout that we did. We do it every offseason, but each coach has version of it and his (Zach Duval) was the one that got us and pushed us.”
On seeing leaders emerge:
“I think Mick (Stoltenberg), probably the most to me because I’m around him, but he’s really stepped out and taken in that leadership position. Mick is probably one of the biggest. Younger guys like Ben Stille, he’s grown a lot and he’s becoming more vocal. Even though he’s a quiet guy, he is learning.”
On if he knowns what to expect Friday for practice and how intense it will be:
“We’ll know before practice, but we don’t know yet. It should be pretty intense. We aren’t in pads yet so there won’t be any hitting, but tempo-wise I know it will be fast and everything will be fast. That’s what I’ve heard.”
On excitement to play football again:
“I’m very excited. I just miss hitting people, grabbing people, and putting my hands on another guy. I’m just ready to get out there with the boys, start playing some football, hitting people, and getting the quarterback.”
On not having bowl practice and a bowl game in December:
“It was weird being home, we are usually doing some type of football related something. I remember being home with Khalil (Davis) thinking we should never be here. I told my mom we should never be here again during this time during my career. We were watching UCF, that’s what Khalil and I did, and we watched their defense and saw what was coming.”
On watching UCF defense against Auburn:
“In the Auburn game, I remember them having five sacks in the first half and that was something that stuck out to me and Khalil.”
On how the coaches are teaching right now:
“These coaches are player-first. They are really focusing on us knowing them and knowing the playbook. They are taking it easy and right now we are just learning as much as we can. Information overload. They want us to know a lot, and we will for spring ball.”
