LINCOLN, Neb. – No. 14 University of Nebraska women’s gymnastics topped Pittsburgh on Saturday night in the Devaney Center 196.425 – 193.600 in the annual Power of Pink meet for breast cancer awareness.
Redshirt sophomore Catelyn Orel’s mother Jodie Orel, a breast cancer survivor, joined Catelyn in the march-in for the Power of Pink meet and was honored by Husker Nation along with all other breast cancer survivors in attendance amongst 1330 fans.
Juniors Sienna Crouse and Megan Schweihofer swept the five titles on the night, as Crouse earned bars, beam and all-around, and Schweihofer won vault and floor.
Rotation One
For the first time this season, a Husker other than Sienna Crouse claimed the vault title, as Megan Schweihofer tied her career-high with a 9.90, and Crouse finished in second with a 9.875. Abbie Epperson hit a 9.85 on vault to round out the podium. Freshman Kynsee Roby hit a 9.80 in her career debut on vault. Grace Williams hit a 9.75 and freshman Megan Verceles Carr hit a 9.725 to round out the Husker lineup. Nebraska combined for a respectable 49.175 in the event.
On bars, Pittsburgh was led by Lucy Jones who tied for fourth place with a 9.80. Pitt combined for a 48.800 on bars.
Rotation Two
On bars, Nebraska swept the podium positions, and Sienna Crouse tied her career high with a 9.925 to win the event, her second consecutive title on bars this season. Taylor Houchin also tied her career high with a 9.90 finish second while Schweihofer hit a 9.825 to finish in third. Epperson tied for fourth with a 9.80. Catelyn Orel hit a 9.40 and Roby hit a 9.125 to round out the Huskers. Nebraska hit a 48.850 on bars as a team.
For Pittsburgh on vault, Haley Brechwald hit a 8.850 to split third place with Nebraska’s Epperson. The Panthers finished with a 48.800 on bars. Through two rotations, Nebraska led Pittsburgh 98.025 – 96.800
Rotation Three
On beam Nebraska swept the podium positions on the event. Crouse hit a 9.825 to lead Nebraska and run away with her second event title of the night. Four Huskers hit a 9.80, including Schweihofer, Breen, Hassel and Williams to tie for second. Roby rounded out the group with a 9.225. The Huskers combined for a 49.025 team score.
On floor, Pittsburgh was led by Alecia Petrikis with a 9.825. The Panthers hit a 48.750 as a team, and Nebraska led 146.950 – 145.550.
Rotation Four
The Huskers swept the podium positions again on floor, as Schweihofer won the event with a 9.925. Grace Williams hit a 9.875 while Epperson had a 9.825 to share third with Petrikis of Pittsburgh. Freshman Torri Hutchinson debuted on floor with a 9.80. Hassel had a 9.775 to round out Nebraska’s team score of 49.375.
On beam for Pittsburgh, Cate Conrad hit a 9.80 to tie with the four Huskers and lead the Panthers. Pittsburgh had a team score of 48.050. Nebraska defeated Pittsburgh 196.425 – 193.600.
In the all-around, for the second consecutive week Sienna Crouse posted a score of 39.550, tying the career high she set against Oklahoma last weekend. Megan Schweihofer finished in second with a career-high 39.475
Nebraska will compete in two meets next week, traveling to face No. 5 Florida on Friday, March 2, before traveling home on Saturday, March 3 and hosting the annual Masters Classic on Sunday March 4 at the Devaney Center at 2 p.m., which will serve as Senior Day for the Huskers. Seniors Grace Williams, Danielle Breen and Abbie Epperson will be honored at the Masters Classic on Senior Day. Nebraska will host No. 3 UCLA, Kent State and No. 25 Iowa State at the Masters Classic.
