Nebraska Joins ITA Rankings at No. 42

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska women's tennis team received its first national ranking of the 2018 season, coming in at No. 42 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's weekly rankings that were released on Tuesday.

The ranking comes after the Huskers' seventh win of the season, as they downed Wichita State on Sunday, 4-3, which brought Nebraska's 2018 season record to 7-2. The Huskers paved the path for their victory over the Shockers through two competitive doubles wins by duos junior Paula Del Cueto Castillo and senior Brianna Lashway, 6-3, and senior Katerina Matysova and junior Vasanti Shinde, 6-4. Shinde, Matysova and sophomore Claire Reifeis secured the triumph through three resilient singles victories, two of which were clinched in the third set.

The ITA ranked Wichita State as No. 30 in the nation in its Feb. 20 poll, and Nebraska's two losses of the season were against Vanderbilt and Virginia, who were ranked No. 7 and No. 23, respectively, on Tuesday.

The No. 42 ranking is the Huskers' highest since Feb. 28, 2017, when they were ranked No. 39 after their 4-3 defeat of Wichita State last season.

The Big Red is back in action on Friday, Feb. 23, when it travels to Manhattan, Kan., to take on the No. 35 Kansas State Wildcats in a 10:30 a.m. matchup.
