Lincoln -- The Huskers swept in-state rival Creighton 7-0 to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Huskers dominated in both doubles and singles, but singles is where the team really shined which ultimately lifted the Huskers to a victory.
In doubles play the freshmen duo Isaac Nortey and William Grattan-Smith, who were competing at the No. 1 spot for the first time, dominated Stratton Brown and Brooks Kendall 6-1. Micah Klousia and Chris Dean fought hard but ultimately fell short in the No. 3 spot, losing to Daniel Lopez and Mac Mease 6-3. Junior Toby Boyer and Senior Linus Erhart sealed it for the Huskers with a win over Armando Gandini and Jose Diaz 6-3 in the No. 2 position.
In singles, Boyer defeated Kendall 6-2, 6-0. In the No. 5 position, Dean bested Diaz 6-2, 6-2. Klousia won against Gandini 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 2 position Erhart went back-and-forth with Brown and came out victorious 7-5, 6-2. The two freshmen rounded out the singles wins with Grattan-Smith defeating Mac Mease in a second-set tie breaker, and Nortey battled Lopez, winning 6-4, 7-5.
The Nebraska men's team begins the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2009-2010 season, and has no intentions of slowing down. Head Coach Kerry McDermott expects big things from this team and has seen much improvement from last year's season. "As a whole the team unity is really good, which is one thing I think we lacked last year," McDermott said. "The work ethic so far this year has been great. In practice, we as coaches, are just coaching. We don't have to worry about discipline on and off the court. The guys know what they have to do and with that being said, it makes us easier to be a better team, and for us to be better coaches."
The Huskers are back in action Friday, Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. against North Dakota. Admission to all home matches is free, and the first 50 fans to the game will receive a free slice of Valentino's Pizza.
