The No. 8 Nebraska rifle team will head to Annapolis, Maryland to take on No. 15 Navy on Jan. 19 and No. 11 North Carolina State the next day on Jan. 20. Match action will begin at 7 a.m. CT.
Last Time Out
The Huskers traveled to Columbus, Ohio over the weekend to face No. 6 Ohio State on Saturday and No. 10 Ole Miss on Sunday. The Huskers shot well against both teams, but Saturday’s match ended with the Buckeyes on top, 4,690-4,667 and the Rebels defeated the Huskers the next day with a final score of 4,669-4,660. Nebraska put forth a very well-rounded effort with Samantha Peterson, Dacotah Faught and Nina Radulovic leading the way in both disciplines. Peterson led the team in smallbore over weekend with a mark of 583 against Ohio State on Saturday. Radulovic was close behind with 582. Faught grabbed the team’s highest air rifle score for the weekend, firing 592 on Saturday. Combined with a solid smallbore score of 579, the effort was enough for Faught to shoot a team-high aggregate score of 1,171.
Scouting Navy
The Huskers hold 15-3 overall record against Navy since 2000 and have won the last ten matches against the Midshipmen. Navy currently has a record of 3-4 this season and is led by junior Josh Watson and freshman Torrance Kang. Watson has had Navy’s highest aggregate score in two out of five matches this season, with his smallbore score of 586 against Kentucky remaining the team’s highest. Kang has also had two team-high aggregate scores, pinning down Navy’s highest air rifle score of the season (591) in the President’s Trophy match.
Scouting NC State
Nebraska holds a 20-1 overall record against the Wolfpack since 2007 after suffering a loss in the spring of 2016. NC State currently has a record of 7-2. Graduate student Lauren Phillips and sophomore Kendra Jacobs consistently lead the team in both disciplines. Phillips has fired air rifle scores of 594 or better in three matches and Jacobs notched a career-high air rifle score of 596 against Kentucky.
Huskers Ranked No. 8.
Nebraska moved up one spot in the CRCA poll this week, up from No. 9 going into last weekend. The Huskers traded places with Air Force in the move. West Virginia maintains its No. 1 ranking. TCU remains in second, with Kentucky in third. Murray State and Alaska round out the top five.
