Kicker Drew Brown
On his career
“Well it’s pretty crazy to think about how fact my time here has gone and we still have a game to win. It is senior day and our last game of the season, that’s pretty emotional but at the same time you need to be prepared and show up ready to win.”

A message to freshman Drew Brown
“Just enjoy every single moment you get to spend with your teammates at practice or whatever you’re doing football related. Not that I took anything for granted, but I would do just about anything to go back and relive all of it again. I have no regrets in my time here, but I would definitely do it all over again and appreciate every single moment I had.”

On his onside kick at Penn State
“We work on it every week at our walk-through the day before the game. It’s the first thing we do right after we stretch. I’ve been working on it since the start of the season because you never know when you will need it. Luckily, whenever we need it in a game, we were able to execute. The guys on the outside did a good job catching the ball and dealing with the wetness on the ground. We did a good job on it.”

On the bounce after the kick
“That’s the goal. You want to kick it to where it hits and bounces pretty high. It was kind  of that in between ground for their onside recovery team because their player didn’t decide if he wanted to catch it or not. Luckily De’Mornay (Pierson-El) was there to snatch it down. We did a really good job. Those guys did great on the timing. The toughest part is the timing of the guys crossing the line wherever I kick. Its real easy to be offsides, they did a very good job perfecting that. Onside kicks are one of those plays where you know you are going to get smacked pretty hard. Whether you are  recovering it or on your return team. It’s about getting downfield as quickly as you can, turning your head and being able to react quickly. It’s my job to put the ball in the right spot. They did a good job being able to recover it and stay focused on the ball.”

On Drew’s favorite kick
“There’s a couple. Probably my freshman year against Iowa where I tied it into overtime and we won that game. Southern Miss my sophomore year the 50-yarder I made at the half and the five field goals in the first half. Last year, my career long, against Purdue, the 51-yarder. Those are the three that stick out to me.”

On what a win would mean against Iowa
“It would be awesome. The seniors would be able to end their career on a high note. We haven’t had a great record here at home this season and to be able to top it off with a win against a good team like Iowa would be something special.”

On Iowa as a rivalry game
“I think every game is a rivalry game. Conference games for sure, you play each other every year. You are playing to get into the Big Ten Championship. I think every game we play is a rivalry, especially in the Big Ten West. You have the Iowas, Wisconsins and Minnesotas of the world who are pretty close geographically to us but they are always good teams and there are always good games. I think every team would be considered a rival to us.”

On Coach Riley’s constant mood
“It just goes to show you what kind of man he is and what kind of coach he is. Based off what the people have said who coached with him and throughout his career. Everyone says the same exact thing ‘He’s always making the right decisions and he doesn’t let the things he can’t control get to him.’ I think that’s what makes him such a great coach. We haven’t had a great season record-wise but he’s taught myself and a lot of other teammates life lessons that we can use to our advantage when we run into adversities in life. Whether it is football or whatever the case is. He’s done an unbelievable job being able to move on to the next week and focus on the next team. We can’t thank him enough for that.”

On being in the middle of the coach issues
“It’s pretty emotional. Obviously we had won the Iowa game and we were pretty excited about it then the news came along. What I would tell the younger guys now is to keep fighting and keep doing what you love. Don’t worry about the things you can’t control because you’ll drive yourself crazy worrying about it. I think you have to stay consistent and you’ve got to stay within yourself to do everything you can do to become a better player. Whether it is on the field or off the field. I think that’s the biggest thing is to control what you can control and everything will be just fine.”

On questioning being a Husker after Bo Pelini was fired
“Oh no. This is the place that I’ve always wanted to be. Whether I was the starting kicker or I redshirted that year, this is always the place that I’ve wanted to be. That is probably the first thought among a lot of players and I get it, guys want to play. This has always been destination one for me in my heart and I’m lucky to be able to have lived it out.”

On ‘taking it in’ as a senior
“I wish I could but at the same time it’s just another week. Another week of preparation to beat another good team. We are going to do all we can and I’m going to take it like a normal week. Like the first week of the season. I am going to do everything I can in my job, make my kicks and put my kickoffs in the right place. Hopefully we can come out on top.”

On what’s next for Drew Brown
“I don’t know, I haven’t really thought about it. I just want to end the season on a good note. Once you start to think about the future and think ahead, it takes away from your performance and what you’re doing now. I just try to live in the moment. That’s what I was taught by my parents and high school coaches was to just to focus on what’s in front of you  and not look too far ahead.”
