The tenth-ranked Nebraska rifle team will conclude its fall season when it faces No. 5 Kentucky, No. 8 Air Force and No. 6 Ohio State over the course of Nov. 18-19 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Action was originally scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. but has been moved to start at 2 p.m. on both days.
Last Time Out
The Huskers last competed in Fort Worth, Texas in a match against Memphis on Oct. 29. NU won the match 4,665-4,640 after falling to both Memphis and TCU a day earlier. As a team Nebraska fired a season-high smallbore score of 2,315, ultimately boosting them to victory over the Tigers after the teams tied in air rifle. Hannah Virga paved the way in smallbore for Nebraska with a career-high score of 585 and Dacotah Faught fired a 592 to pace Nebraska in air rifle. The outing helped Nebraska jump from 14th to 7th in the CRCA poll, their first top-ten ranking of the season. The Huskers have a total record of 2-3 this season and are currently ranked tenth.
Scouting Kentucky
The Huskers hold an all-time record of 12-31 against UK, dating back to 1999. The Wildcats last competed on Nov. 4 at home when they defeated Ole Miss 4,689-4,664. Freshman Henrik Larsen was clearly the shooter to watch, tying his own school record in smallbore with a score of 595. Larsen also paced Kentucky in air rifle, firing a 596. Larsen is currently tied with TCU senior Mindy Miles for the highest smallbore score of the 2017-18 season. Junior Hanna Carr contributed to the win by shooting 582 in smallbore and 591 in air rifle. The Wildcats have a record of 13-1 this season.
Scouting Air Force
The Huskers hold an all-time record of 23-11 against the Falcons since 2000. Air Force is coming off of a win against VMI on Nov. 5, firing 4,656 as a team. It was enough to defeat VMI’s coed team (4,505) and women’s team (4,393). Air Force won the President’s Cup a day earlier, defeating Army West Point, Navy, and Coast Guard. Freshman Sarah Sawicki was the shooter to watch, leading the Falcons in air rifle with a score of 596. Sawicki’s aggregate score of 1,178 was the highest on any team during the President’s Cup competition. Air Force has an overall record of 5-4 in the 2017-18 season.
Scouting Ohio State
Since 2000, Nebraska has built up an overall record of 12-3 against the Buckeyes. OSU is coming off of a second place finish in a triangle with Murray State and UTEP, as well as a win against UTEP the next day. A shooter to watch is Elizabeth Dutton, who led the team in smallbore both days after firing two consecutive career highs. Rihann Travis paced the Buckeyes in air rifle over the weekend, firing a 595 against UTEP on Sunday. Ohio State has an overall record of 4-5 this season.
