Nebraska Wins Three on Day Two

Lawerence, Kansas – Action continued for the Nebraska women’s tennis team on the second day of the ITA Central Regional Championships. The Huskers completed another tough round of singles and doubles to total three wins.

First to take a victory home for the Big Red was junior Paula Del Cueto Castillo. The Sevilla, Spain native pushed through main draw singles action to secure a 7-6(4), 7-5 nail-biter over Tamara Kupkova of Tulsa. This marked Del Cueto Castillo’s second of the tournament. Del Cueto Castillo later fell to Sofia Blanco of Oklahoma State, removing Nebraska from main draw singles competition.

Bringing Nebraska’s second victory for Friday tennis action was senior Katerina Matysova. Showing improvement after injury, Matysova downed Amber Policare of Kansas in the first round of consolation singles with a 6-2, 6-1 final decision.

Also finding success in the consolation singles bracket, Husker Marina Cozac picked up a victory of her own. The junior from Chicago, Ill. pushed to a 6-3, 6-2 win over WIU’s Courtney Lubbers.

Doubles duo Vasanti Shinde and Hayley Haakenstad advanced to play as the only Huskers in the second round of doubles. The pair put up a fight against Kansas’ Koch and Toran-Ribes, but fell to the Jayhawks 8-5.

The ITA Central Regional Championships will continue tomorrow with extra matches being added in the morning. The Huskers will push to the third round of action before finishing out their invitational season for the fall.
