Lawerence, Kansas – The Nebraska women’s tennis team completed its final day at the ITA Central Regional Championships capturing four final victories to bring the tournament total to 14. This marks the end of the fall campaign for the Big Red.
The Huskers each participated in an extra singles match to mark competition for Saturday.
Showing great talent in the Husker roster, three of Nebraska’s four wins came from sophomores Jeannie Lozowski, Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad. First to earn a win on day three, Lozowski took two swift sets over Kansas’ Amber Policare. Lozowski defeated her opponent with a 6-1, 6-4 final score.
Reifeis, ending an already successful fall season, also battled her way to a win for Nebraska on Saturday. The Indianapolis, Ind. native pulled a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Rouxanne Van Rensburg of Tulsa to bring her weekend total to two.
Representing the sophomores as one of three team captains, Haakenstad stormed through a three set victory over Anelisse Torrico of MSU. Dropping the first set, 4-6, Haakenstad battled back, 6-1, 10-7 to bring home the big win.
Rounding out the season for the Huskers was Katerina Matysova. Another team captain, Matysova earned a well-fought 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Anita Detlava of ASU. This win was Matysova’s second of the weekend.
As the Nebraska women’s tennis team looks forward to regular season, Head Coach Scott Jacobson has a positive outlook on the season to come.
“Lots of positives over the weekend, “ Jacobson said. “The team showed tremendous heart and tremendous passion all weekend long. I believe we have an opportunity to have a phenomenal spring season if we continue to grow out games over the coming days and weeks.”
The Huskers return to action on Jan. 26, 2018 for the ITA Kick Off Classic in Nashville, Tenn. The classic runs through Jan. 27, 2018 and marks the beginning of regular season for many collegiate tennis teams. Nebraska will return to the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center for home tennis action on Feb. 2, 2018 as they welcome the Colorado State Rams to Lincoln at 2 p.m. central.
