Huskers Head into Conference Play with Win

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska women's tennis team remained unbeaten with a 7-0 sweep of Colorado State Sunday afternoon at the Dillon Tennis Center. With the win, the Huskers improved to 9-0 on the season as they head into Wednesday's Big Ten opener.  

Senior Mary Hanna and sophomore Paula Del Cueto Castillo defeated Emily Kolbow and Madison Porter of the Rams, 6-1 at No.1 doubles to quickly put NU ahead in doubles. This marked the duo's fourth win of the season, as the pair is undefeated at No. 1 doubles.

Senior Lisa Andersson and sophomore Vasanti Shinde also gained a win against their Ram adversaries, Sandra Keta and Solene Crawley. The pair earned a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 doubles spot to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match. 

In singles competetion, Andersson pocketed her second win of the day with another defeat of the Ram's Crawley, posting a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. With the win, Andersson improves to 5-1 on the season. 

Also sporting two wins for Sunday was Hanna, who posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Celine Voss at No. 3 singles. 

Following suit, junior Katerina Matysova gained her seventh overall win on the season after defeating Keta, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

At No. 1 singles, Claire Reifeis defeated Kolbow 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the victory for the Huskers. Reifeis improves to 7-0 overall and 3-0 at No. 1 singles. 

Freshman Jeannie Lozowski brought the Huskers to 5-0 after earning a 6-4, 7-6 win over Porter at No. 5 singles. With the win, Lozowski advances to 7-1 in singles matches this season. 

Wrapping up tennis action for Nebraska at the No. 2 spot, Del Cueto Castillo defeated Colorado State's Riley Reeves in a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 match-up. This was Del Cueto Castillo's first victory of the season at the No. 2 spot and third win overall in singles.

The Nebraska women's tennis team hits the road on Wednesday, Feb. 22. at 11 a.m. as it opens up conference play against Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J.. The Big Red will be back at home next Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Dillon Tennis Center for a Saturday doubleheader against  Wichita State Shockers (11 a.m.) and Omaha (3:30 p.m.).
