Huskers Sweep Saturday Duals

Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team hosted both the UMKC Kangaroos and the South Dakota Coyotes on Saturday at the Dillion Tennis Center, sweeping both opponents to close the Huskers' opening weekend.

The morning match against the Kangaroos ended with a 7-0 Husker victory. After winning the doubles point, Nebraska swept singles play. Senior duo Mary Hanna and Lisa Andersson earned their first doubles victory of the spring season against UMKC's Melinda Johnson and Yana Grechkina, 6-2. Freshmen Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad clinched the doubles point for the Big Red by defeating Katie Fries and Mariam Kurasbediani, 6-2. Reifeis went on the help the Huskers further by defeating Aliona Ladustka in singles play 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 2 singles spot. 

Sophomore Vasanti Shinde contributed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Johnson at the No. 1 singles spot. The remaining Huskers also won in straight sets in singles play, with Jeanine Lozowski defeating Marina Albert (6-1, 6-0), Paula Del Cueto Castillo defeating Katie Fries (6-1, 6-1), Katrina Matysova defeating Yana Grechkina (6-1, 6-2), and M'Balia Bangoura earning a win over Mariam Kurasbediani (6-3, 6-4). 

After the sweep of UMCK in the morning, the Huskers took on the South Dakota Coyotes during the afternoon and came away with another 7-0 victory. Doubles partners Hanna and Del Cueto Castillo claimed a victory against South Dakota's Barbora Kollarova and Anastasia Bondarenko, 6-2. The Big Red would go on to sweep the Coyotes in doubles to score the first team point of the match.

In singles, Shinde would finish off her weekend with a 7-5, 6-1 win, defeating Ellie Burns of the Coyotes. Shinde found herself down early in the first set, 5-0. She would then win the next 11 games to take a 4-0 lead in the second set. Shinde finished the weekend undefeated in both doubles and singles with two wins at the No. 1 singles spot. 

Freshman Jeannie Lozowski finished her weekend with a win over Kollarova at the No. 2 singles spot 6-1, 6-1 after the starting the weekend at the No. 4 spot. Nebraska would go on to sweep the Coyotes in the rest of singles play with Matysova defeating Yuliya Sidenko (6-3, 6-0), Andersson beating Nanette Nylund (6-0, 6-1), Hanna defeating Anastasia Bondarenko (6-1, 6-1), and Haakenstad claiming a win against Hannah Wich (6-2, 6-0).

The Huskers will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Dillion Tennis Center when they take on Wyoming at 11 a.m. and North Dakota at 3:30 p.m. Fans can stay up to date by checking Huskers.com for live stats and match recaps.
