Hays, Kan. – Three Huskers won weight class titles at the Bob Smith Open at Gross Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, Dec. 3. Chad Red (141), Taylor Venz (184) and Eric Schultz (197), each wrestling unattached, managed perfect records during the tournament.
Red opened with four consecutive pins before recording back-to-back decisions en route to the 141-pound title. Venz won all five of his matches in bonus-point fashion, earning one pin, two technical falls and two major decisions. Schultz went 5-0 with one technical fall.
Patrick Grayson also earned a podium spot with his fourth-place finish at heavyweight. Additional Huskers to compete in the Bob Smith Open include Mitchell Maginnis (125), Caleb Licking (149), Kyle Ruettiger (149), Luke Weber (157), Dalton Peters (165) and Cade Svoboda (184).
