Huskers Hold Steady in First at KAT Klash

Houston – The top-ranked Nebraska bowling team went 4-1 in five traditional matches Saturday to remain in first place following the second day of the KAT Klash at Emerald Lanes in Houston, Texas. 

Through two days of action, the Cornhuskers have a total pinfall of 10,959. NU will face the second seed Sam Houston State in the opening round of Sunday’s championship tournament. The host Bearkats have a total pinfall of 10,890 after two days of competition. Fourth-ranked Vanderbilt sits in third place with a pinfall of 10,885.

Gazmine Mason led the way for the Big Red, finishing 11th overall with an average of 206.2. Kelly Belzeski finished 20th overall with an average of 198, while Julia Bond posted an average of 196.2 to help the Husker effort.

The Huskers opened the day with a 982-894 loss to third-ranked Arkansas State, but responded with victories over their next four opponents, including two top-five teams.

The Huskers took down Vanderbilt by a score of 964-938 and followed with a win over Texas Southern by a score of 1,008-979.

NU defeated second-ranked Stephen F. Austin for the first time this season, 990-904, before closing the day with a 969-952 victory over Louisiana Tech.

Nebraska’s match against Sam Houston State in the opening round of the best-of-seven Baker format championship tournament will begin at 8:20 a.m. (CT) on Sunday. The winner of the NU-SHSU match will move on to the final, while the loser will face the winner of the Vanderbilt-Arkansas State match for a spot in the final.
