Game NOTES

* Nebraska suffered its first loss of the season with tonight’s 23-17 overtime setback. * The loss ended Nebraska’s 7-0 start to the season, which was its best since beginning 11-0 in 2001. The loss also snapped Nebraska’s eight-game win streak, its longest since winning 13 straight between the 2000 and 2001 seasons. * The Huskers fell to 8-3 all-time in overtime games. Nebraska has lost its last two overtime games (lost 36-33 at Miami last season). * Each of Nebraska’s last 10 losses dating back to 2014 have been by 10 or fewer points, including seven by six points or less. * Wisconsin won for the fourth straight time in the series and took a 7-4 overall series lead.  * Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. accounted for 192 yards of total offense, including 39 rushing yards and 153 passing yards. He increased his career total to 10,181 yards of total offense, making him the 11th player in Big Ten history to surpass 10,000 career yards of total offense. * Armstrong’s 192 yards of total offense leaves him 52 yards shy of Taylor Martinez’s school record of 10,233 yards of total offense.   * Armstrong scored on a two-yard TD run in the fourth quarter for his 22nd career rushing touchdown and the 87th touchdown he has accounted for in his career. Armstrong is tied for second on the NU career touchdowns list at 87 with Taylor Martinez, trailing Eric Crouch’s school record by three touchdowns.   * Senior safety Nathan Gerry had two fourth-quarter interceptions, giving him four interceptions in 2016 and 13 in his career.  * Gerry moved into a tie for second with Josh Bullocks on the Nebraska career interceptions list. He trails only Dana Stephenson (14) on the list after also passing Bret Clark (12) in tonight’s game. * Gerry collected seven tackles, increasing his career total to 249, leaving him five tackles shy of the top 10 on the Nebraska career tackles list. * Nebraska senior receiver Jordan Westerkamp caught three passes for 62 yards. Westerkamp’s three receptions give him 145 in his career, moving him up to third on the NU receptions list. Westerkamp passed Johnny Rodgers (143 receptions) in tonight’s game.  * Despite losing in overtime, Nebraska outscored Wisconsin 10-0 in the fourth quarter to force the extra period. The Huskers have outscored their opponents 108-13 in the fourth quarter this season. * Senior running back Terrell Newby rushed for 77 yards, increasing his career total to 1,948. He is 52 yards from becoming the 29th Husker with 2,000 career rushing yards.   * Freshman punter Caleb Lightbourn averaged 41.6 yards on seven punts, with three punts downed inside the Badger 20-yard line. The three punts downed inside the 20 tied his season high set last week vs. Purdue. * Senior linebacker Josh Banderas had eight tackles in tonight’s game, marking his third straight game with at least eight tackles. * Sophomore wide receiver Stanley Morgan Jr. had a career-high five catches for 58 yards. Morgan had four catches for 56 yards in the fourth quarter.

Madison, Wis. - No. 7 Nebraska overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to send the game to overtime tied at 17, but No. 11 Wisconsin scored a touchdown on its first OT possession to give the Badgers a 23-17 win on Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium.

Nebraska slipped to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten, while the Badgers improved to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Dare Ogunbowale scored from 11 yards out in overtime, but Andrew Endicott, who missed wide left on a 40-yard field goal attempt with under two minutes left that would have given Wisconsin a lead, missed the extra-point attempt wide left again to leave the door open for the Huskers in overtime.

However, on 3rd-and-8 Nebraska wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp was impeded on his crossing route by Badger linebacker T.J. Watt who had dropped into coverage and ran into Westerkamp who had two steps on a trailing Badger defensive back. Westerkamp had no play on the pass from Tommy Armstrong Jr. 

That left the Huskers with a 4th-and-8, and Armstrong took a shot at the end zone to Stanley Morgan Jr. The big Nebraska receiver made four catches for 56 yards in the fourth quarter to help get the game to overtime, but could not come down with a grab over the top of two Badgers, and the Huskers were left with their first loss of the season.

Morgan finished the night with a career-high five catches for 58 yards, while Westerkamp added three receptions for a team-best 62 yards.

Armstrong struggled throughout the night against a stingy Badger defense, completing just 12-of-31 passes for 153 yards with two first-half interceptions. However, Nebraska's Blackshirt defense allowed just three points off the turnovers to keep the Huskers within striking distance.

The Blackshirts made up for Armstrong's first-half interception by pulling down a pair of their own in the fourth quarter - both by senior safety Nathan Gerry. The Husker offense also managed just three points from the two turnovers.

In fact, the two teams not only matched each other point-for-point during regulation, it was nearly yard-for-yard. Nebraska totaled 303 yards in regulation, while Wisconsin had 312. But in the overtime, Wisconsin prevailed with six points and 25 yards on the ground, while the Huskers mustered just two yards on their OT possession.

Nebraska trailed 10-7 at halftime despite outscoring the Badgers 7-3 in the second quarter. Wisconsin took a 7-0 lead after the opening quarter on Bradrick Shaw's 21-yard touchdown run with 9:38 left in the first. It was the longest run of the half by either team, and Shaw's lone carry of the half.

Nebraska answered early in the second quarter on Devine Ozigbo's one-yard touchdown plunge with 13:41 left in the half. Ozigbo's run capped a six-play, 42-yard drive that was set up by a solid punt return by De'Mornay Pierson-El. The drive also featured a 36-yard reception by Westerkamp that moved Nebraska to 1st-and-Goal at the Wisconsin 3.

Wisconsin regained the lead with Endicott's 44-yard field goal with 6:53 left in the half. The Badgers moved just 25 yards in seven plays before Endicott's field goal, which capped a drive that started near midfield after Armstrong threw his second interception of the half.

Armstrong completed just 4-of-13 passes for 59 yards in the opening half against the Badgers. However, Nebraska's secondary was equally stingy. Wisconsin quarterbacks Alex Hornibrook and Bart Houston combined to go just 8-for-14 for 82 yards.

Wisconsin outgained Nebraska 152-132 overall in the first half, while the Big Red running game beat the Badgers on the ground, 93-56. The Blackshirts held UW running back Corey Clement to just 15 yards on eight first-half carries.Newby led the Huskers with 43 yards on seven first-half carries, while Ozigbo added 30 yards on seven totes.

Wisconsin again struck first in the second half, pushing its lead to two scores for the first time after a 13-play, 72-yard drive that consumed 6:36 to open the third quarter. The Badgers converted three third downs to maintain the drive, before Hornibrook hit Robert Wheelwright with a nine-yard touchdown pass to cap the march and give Wisconsin a 17-7 advantage.

After both defenses traded three-and-outs on the following possessions, Nebraska took over on its own 25 with just under five minutes left in the third quarter. Fourteen plays later, Armstrong hit paydirt from two yards out on a run to the right side to pull Nebraska within 17-14 with 13:45 remaining. The Big Red's drive consumed 5:58 on the clock.

On Wisconsin's ensuing drive, senior safety Nathan Gerry pulled down his third interception of the season, setting up the Nebraska offense just across midfield. But the Huskers were unable to move the ball, before a Caleb Lightbourn punt pinned the Badgers at their own 10 with 11:38 remaining in the game.

On the Badgers' next drive, Ogunbowale sprung the Badgers from the shadows of their own goalpost with a 39-yard run to put Wisconsin at the NU 47. But Gerry struck again, this time intercepting Bart Houston's pass to stop the Badger threat and give the Big Red the ball at the Husker 30. It was Gerry's fourth interception of the season and 13th of his career.

This time, Armstrong and the offense converted the Badger turnover into points with Drew Brown's 35-yard field goal with 3:43 left. Brown's field goal capped an 11-play, 52-yard drive for the Big Red that took 5:53.

The Badgers again broke a big run on their next drive, with Clement getting free for the only time all night with a 41-yard run to set up a 40-yard field goal attempt by Endicott. His field goal attempt missed wide left, and Armstrong and the Huskers took over with 1:43 left and a chance to win.

Nebraska's senior quarterback pushed the Big Red to midfield with two quick completions to Morgan Jr., before the Badgers bowed up and shut the door to send the game to overtime.

The Huskers continued to show why they are the nation's best fourth-quarter team, outscoring the Badgers 10-0 in the final period to push Nebraska's season edge to 108-13 (+95). But it wasn't enough to prevent an overtime win for Wisconsin.

Armstrong finished the night with 13 carries for 39 yards, while senior I-back Terrell Newby led the Husker ground game with 17 carries for 77 yards. Ozigbo added 10 carries for 33 yards and a score.

Wisconsin managed 223 rushing yards, but 80 of those yards came on two fourth-quarter carries by Clement (41) and Ogunbowale (39) that did not ultimately lead to points. However, all 25 yards to the end zone in overtime for the Badgers came on the ground with the first 14 to Clement on three carries, before Ogunbowale's touchdown.

Ogunbowale finished with a game-high 120 rushing yards on just 11 carries, including the game-winning touchdown in OT. Clement added 19 carries for 82 yards, including 55 yards on his final five carries of the game after getting just 27 yards on his first 14 totes.

The Blackshirts surrendered just 114 passing yards to Hornibrook (10-for-16, 71 yards, 1 INT) and Houston (4-for-7, 43 yards, 1 INT). Both of Wisconsin's interceptions came in the fourth quarter, and the Huskers turned the two miscues into three points. The Badgers finished the night with 337 total yards.

Nebraska finished with 152 rushing yards and 153 passing yards for 305 total yards against the Badgers. Nebraska was flagged for just two penalties for 10 yards, while Wisconsin was called for its only penalty in eight quarters with a five-yard defensive offside penalty in the second half.

Gerry led the Blackshirts with two interceptions and another pass breakup to go along with seven solo tackles. Senior linebackers Josh Banderas and Michael Rose-Ivey each contributed team bests with eight stops on the night.

Ryan Connelly and Leon Jacobs both had 11 tackles for the Badgers.

Nebraska continues Big Ten road action next Saturday, when the Huskers head to the Horseshoe to take on No. 6 Ohio State. Kick-off between the Big Red and the Buckeyes is set for 7 p.m.
