7 ––Nebraska improved to 7-0 with today’s victory over Purdue. This is Nebraska’s first 7-0 start since beginning the 2001 season with an 11-0 record. ·NU has won eight straight games overall, marking the Huskers’ longest win streak since winning 13 straight games spanning the 2000 and 2001 seasons. ·The 7-0 start marks the first of Mike Riley’s college coaching career and the eight straight victories mark the longest win streak of Riley’s college career. ·Nebraska improved to 4-0 in Big Ten play for the first time since the Huskers joined the conference. Overall, it is Nebraska’s first 4-0 start in conference play since beginning 7-0 in Big 12 play in 2001. ·Nebraska took a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series with Purdue, including 2-0 at Memorial Stadium. 9,989 –– Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. accounted for 303 yards of total offense, including 51 rushing yards and 252 passing yards. The output leaves Armstrong with 9,989 yards of total offense in his career. Helu’s TD run occurred with 1:04 elapsed in the game. 40–– Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass with De’Mornay Pierson-El in the third quarter. The 40-yard touchdown reception was Pierson-El’s longest reception since his freshman season, when he caught a career-long 46 yard pass at Northwestern in 2014. ·Pierson-El had three receptions for a season-high 69 receiving yards. 51 –– Junior kicker Drew Brown connected on a career-long 51-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, bettering his 50-yard field goal against Southern Miss in 2015. ·Brown also connected on a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter and missed a 45-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. He is now 7-of-9 on the season and has 42 career field goals made. 13 –– Nebraska junior safety Kieron Williams had a pair of interceptions in today’s game, pushing Nebraska’s season total to 13 interceptions. Nebraska had 10 interceptions in 13 games last season. ·Williams had an interception on the first play of the game and a pick in the fourth quarter to help seal the win. His four interceptions lead the Huskers, one better than both Aaron Williams and Chris Jones. Other Notes... * Nebraska out-scored Purdue 10-0 in the fourth quarter of today’s game and now has a 98-13 advantage in the fourth quarter this season. The +85 point fourth-quarter differential leads the nation. * Nebraska ran for 74 yards in the fourth quarter on 16 carries, including 65 yards from Terrell Newby on 10 carries. The Huskers are outrushing opponents by 458 yards on the season and are averaging better than 65 yards rushing in the fourth quarter. * Nebraska trailed 14-10 at halftime today before rallying for a victory. Today marked the third halftime deficit Nebraska has overcome to win in 2016, also coming from behind for home victories over Oregon and Illinois. * Senior receiver Brandon Reilly set season highs with four receptions for 73 yards. Reilly is now averaging 23.0 yards on his 10 receptions this season. * Senior receiver Alonzo Moore had a 24-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give NU a 24-14 lead. The 24-yard run tied his career long, matching a 24-yard run against Fresno State. Moore’s touchdown run was the second by a Husker receiver this season, including Jordan Westerkamp’s 10-yard touchdown run at Northwestern. * Senior linebacker Josh Banderas recorded a season-high 13 tackles in today’s game, one shy of matching his career high against USC in the 2014 Holiday Bowl. * Freshman Tre Bryant had a 59-yard kickoff return to open the second half. The 59-yard return was a season-long for Nebraska and the longest by a Husker since Ameer Abdullah had a 76-yard kickoff return against Rutgers in 2014. * Freshman punter Caleb Lightbourn averaged 43.0 yards on four punts, with a season-high three punts downed inside the 20, with all three inside the Boilermaker 10-yard line. * Purdue’s 88-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter was the third-longest touchdown pass in school history against Nebraska and the longest since 1998. * Purdue scored a first-quarter touchdown marking just the second score in the first quarter by a Nebraska opponent this season. Lincoln - Tommy Armstrong Jr. became Nebraska's career leader in pass completions to lead the No. 8 Huskers to a 27-14 win over Purdue on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
With the victory, Nebraska improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten, while Purdue slipped to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Cornhuskers earned their eighth consecutive win overall dating back to last season, while extending their NCAA-record sellout streak at Memorial Stadium to 352 games.
Armstrong, Nebraska's senior quarterback from Cibolo, Texas, completed 17-of-31 passes for 252 yards and one touchdown, while adding 10 carries for 51 rushing yards and Nebraska's first touchdown to finish with 303 total offense yards against the Boilermakers.
Armstrong wasted little time in getting the Big Red on the board on Saturday, sprinting into the end zone from 22 yards out on Nebraska's first offensive play just 16 seconds into the game. Armstrong's run converted an interception by junior safety Kieron Williams into points to give Nebraska a 7-0 lead. Williams sniffed out a trick play as Bilal Marshall threw the interception on a reverse on Purdue's opening offensive play of the game.
Purdue responded with a pair of touchdown passes from David Blough to DeAngelo Yancey around a field goal by Husker junior Drew Brown to take a 14-10 lead into the locker room at halftime. Yancey's first touchdown catch came from one-yard out, while his second covered 88 yards as the third-longest touchdown pass against Nebraska in history. Yancey finished with four receptions for 100 yards and both of Purdue's scores.
But as they have done throughout the season, the Huskers controlled the second half, outscoring Purdue 17-0 after halftime, including 10-0 in the fourth quarter. Nebraska pushed its season edge in the final quarter to 98-13 (+85).
Tre Bryant sparked the Huskers right out of the gate in the second half with a 59-yard kickoff return, but the Nebraska offense was unable to capitalize.
However, after Caleb Lightbourn buried the Boilermakers inside their 10 yard line for the third time in the game, the Blackshirts shut down the Purdue offense. On Nebraska's next drive, Armstrong hit De'Mornay Pierson-El on a slant that the junior wide receiver took to the house from 40 yards out to give the Huskers a 17-14 lead with 7:45 left in the third quarter. Pierson-El finished with three receptions for 69 yards.
The Blackshirts continued to silence the Boilers, and Armstrong and the Husker offense closed the third quarter by starting a long march.
Senior wide receiver Alonzo Moore capped that drive 55 seconds into the fourth quarter with his 24-yard touchdown run on a reverse to push Nebraska's lead to 24-14. The Huskers' game-sealing drive covered 82 yards in 11 plays and consumed 5:47.
Moore added one reception for 14 yards on the day, while senior Brandon Reilly led the Huskers with four receptions for 73 yards. Stanley Morgan Jr. added two receptions for 43 yards, including a 28-yard grab that gave Armstrong the school completion mark with 576. Armstrong finished the day with 577 completions, passing Taylor Martinez's previous mark of 575.
On Purdue's next possession, the Boilermakers attempted a fake punt in their own territory that was snuffed out by the Husker special teams. Despite losing five yards on their drive, the Huskers and Brown put three more points on the board with his career-long 51-yard field goal to give Nebraska a 27-14 edge.
Purdue's next drive ended quickly with Kieron Williams' second interception of the game and team-leading fourth of the season. But the the Huskers were unable to convert the turnover into points as Brown misfired on a 45-yard field goal.
But the Blackshirts continued to blanket the Boilers, with Purdue's next drive nearly resulting in Kieron Williams' third interception of the game. Nebraska's offense did enough on its ensuing drive to milk the clock under one minute and extinguish all of Purdue's timeouts.
Terrell Newby did the most damage for Nebraska in the fourth quarter, rushing 10 times for 65 yards to finish with 22 carries for 82 yards on the day.
As a team, Nebraska amassed 409 yards of total offense including 157 rushing yards on 37 attempts. The Huskers also controlled the clock by holding possession for 33:19.
The Blackshirts held a high-powered Purdue offense to just 333 total yards, including just 24 rushing yards. Blough completed 25-of-43 passess for 309 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He was also sacked three times, finishing with minus-21 yards rushing on the day.
Senior linebacker Josh Banderas led the Blackshirts with a season-high 13 tackles, while sophomore linebacker Dedrick Young II added 11 stops and two of Nebraska's six pass breakups on the afternoon. Kevin Maurice, Carlos Davis and Ross Dzuris notched Nebraska's sacks. The sack for Dzuris came on Nebraska's final defensive play of the game and pushed his team-leading total to 4.5 sacks. The sack for Davis was his first of the season, while Maurice added his third sack of the season.
Nebraska returns to Big Ten home action next Saturday when they take on Purdue at Memorial Stadium Lincoln. Kick-off between the Big Red and the Boilermakers is set for 2:30 p.m.
