Nebraska Basketball Coach Tim Miles and senior guard Tai Webster represented the Huskers in Washington, D.C. for the annual Big Ten Media Day Thursday.
Without its top two scorers, Miles will rely on Webster, who averaged 10.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game as a junior, raising his scoring average over six points per game. Webster is a two-year starter and enters his senior year with 96 career appearances.
"Our one senior, Tai Webster, I think will be really good," Miles said. "He took a big leap last year. I think he'll take another leap this year."
Webster spent part of the summer representing New Zealand as they tried to quality for the Rio Olympics. Webster averaged 16 points and nine rebounds in qualifying before losing to Canada in the semfinals.
Miles also talked about the sophomore quartet of Ed Morrow Jr., Michael Jacobson, Jack McVeigh and Glynn Watson Jr., who were four of the Huskers' top eight players from a year ago. Jacobson started NU's final 25 games, while Watson made 18 starts in 2015-16.
"We have a group of sophomores that played a lot last year," Miles said. "We played 21 Big Ten games (regular season and tournament) last year. We were 8 and 13, and the average margin -- the difference was .2 of a point. Our opponents got 71.3 points a game, we got 71.1. So we have a lot of guys that were involved in good games."
"I like this team. I think they'll be fun," Miles said. "We're young. Like you said, eight of our guys are freshmen and sophomores, but I think they're a solid nucleus."
In addition to the press conference, Miles and Webster met with local, regional and national media throughout the day. Fans can watch the appearances of Miles and Webster on BTN, as well as Miles' Facebook Live appearance with Nicole Auerbach of USA Today.
The Huskers open the 2016-17 season with an exhibition game against Chadron State on Monday, Nov. 7 at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
