To honor one of the most successful and popular assistant coaches in college football history, Nebraska athletic administrators have decided to offer a live audio stream of Sunday’s Celebration of Life Service for Milt Tenopir.

Tenopir, 76, died of leukemia Monday evening at his Lincoln home. Sunday’s Oct. 2nd audio stream of the formal program will originate on Huskers.com with a live clickable link, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium’s West Stadium Club.

Coach Mike Riley: It Was an Honor to Get to Know Milt as a Man and a Coach

“It was an honor to get to know Milt as a man and a coach,” Nebraska Football Coach Mike Riley said. “He will forever be a Husker.”

Nebraska offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh, who became a close friend of Tenopir’s over the past 21 months, calls Milt the greatest college football offensive line coach of all time. “He was a great man, friend and mentor,” Cavanaugh said. “We love you Coach. Rest in Peace.”

A Nebraska assistant from 1974 to 2002, Tenopir coached six Outland Trophy winners. Dave Rimington won the first two in 1981 and 1982, followed by Dean Steinkuhler (1983), Will Shields (1992), Zach Wiegert (1994) and Aaron Taylor (1997).

Tenopir also coached 21 All-Americans, 11 Academic All-Americans, six NCAA Today’s Top Ten Award winners and 49 all-conference honorees. Under Tenopir’s leadership, Nebraska won 13 NCAA team rushing titles.

A public visitation honoring Tenopir will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home (6800 S. 14th St). The Tenopir family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
