SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Nebraska cross country team began its 2016 season with a solid start at the Augustana Twilight on Friday at Yankton Trails.
The Husker men soared to take the title with just 17 points while the women came in at third with 65 total points.
The men's squad dominated its division with eight Huskers finishing inside the top 10. Senior Jacob Olson (18:48.86), sophomore Wyatt McGuire (19:04.05) and senior Pat Letz (19:10.50) claimed first, second and third-place in the University Division, respectively. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Husker men have won the division crown at the Augustana Twilight.
Junior Katrina Santiago led the Big Red women for the first time in her career with a time of 17:08.22, finishing ninth in the University Division. Freshman Lillian Markusch also made a big splash in her first collegiate race, placing 11th with a time of 17:11.41. Freshman Sarah Conlon (17:15.03), junior Bonnie Smith (17:18.66) and sophomore Nicole Colonna (17:23.74) also posted admirable times, coming in at 13th, 15th and 18th, respectively.
The Cornhuskers look to continue to build their momentum going into the 27th annual Woody Greeno/Dirksen Invitational, which is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Pioneers Park.
