The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team has added Abbie Epperson as a transfer for the upcoming season, head coach Dan Kendig announced Friday. Epperson will be eligible to compete as a junior in the upcoming 2017 season.
"I'm just really excited for her," Kendig said. "She gets an opportunity to go to school where her parents went, and where her brother goes. Most of all, I'm excited about what she brings to the team. All of the girls love her, and I think she's going to be a great asset to our team."
An Allen, Texas, native, Epperson competed for Maryland for two seasons before joining the Nebraska program. She qualified for the 2016 NCAA Athens Regional as a sophomore, finishing seventh on uneven bars with a score of 9.85.
She was named the Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week on Feb. 2, 2015, after winning the bars title at Iowa with a career-high 9.90. She also qualified for an NCAA regional on bars as a freshman, finishing tied for 12th.
“I’m so excited to officially be a Husker,” Epperson said. “I can’t wait to compete with such an amazing team. We’ve got great things ahead of us this year.”
Epperson’s mother Lisa (McCrady) competed for the Nebraska women’s gymnastics team from 1988-91, winning All-Big Eight honors in each of her four seasons. Lisa also won the Big Eight all-around title in 1989 and 1991, and Big Eight bars and floor titles in 1990. Her father Mike competed for the Nebraska men’s gymnastics team from 1985-89. Abbie has one brother, Austin, who is a senior on the Nebraska men’s gymnastics team. Austin was a first-team All-American on floor exercise in 2016.
Epperson trained at Metroplex Gymnastics in Allen, Texas, for two years under coaches Marnie Futch and Gina Logan. She was a two-time J.O. National Championships qualifier, finishing fourth on both bars and floor in 2014. Epperson finished third in the all-around at the 2014 Region 3 Championships. At the 2014 Texas State Championships, Epperson took second place on bars, beam and in the all-around.
Epperson was named academic All-Big Ten as a sophomore in 2016.
