Huskers Scrimmage to Make Tweaks for the Season

Lincoln, Neb. --- The Nebraska football team practiced for 90 minutes in full pads and helmets outside on the Ed and Joanne Gass Practice Field on Friday morning. The team spent part of Friday’s practice scrimmaging with referees present for the second time this fall. Defensive coordinator Mark Banker met with the media after practice and discussed the advancements the team has made in the past week. “I felt that this week was the most important week because we had put the building blocks in place, [and] this would give us an indication as to where we could go from there, how fast we could go,” Banker said. The scrimmage focused on varied game situations and plays, while having communication and adjustments take place simultaneously according to Banker. “That two-minute situation is probably as efficient as I’ve ever seen us be,” Banker said. “But we need to be better than two minutes.” Banker said he has seen redshirt freshman defensive tackles Carlos and Khalil Davis operating better as they’re mastering their “controlled mayhem.” “In order for us to win and play at a full capacity, we need those two guys to know what they’re doing, play hard and be efficient so that they can just get after it,” Banker said. Banker also commented on how redshirt freshman defensive end Alex Davis has been a pleasant surprise this week, especially since Davis started playing football his senior year of high school.  “We know that that’s the first thing he’s going to do, he’s going to shine as a pass rusher, but he’s played the run much better,” Banker said. “This kid’s learning.” The Huskers will continue practice this afternoon.
