Huskers First Practice in Memorial Stadium

Lincoln, Neb. --- The Nebraska football team completed its eighth day of fall camp on Saturday afternoon, practicing outside in Memorial Stadium in full pads and helmets for just over two hours.

Head coach Mike Riley spoke to the media following practice, addressing the fact that the team got the chance to practice in the stadium for the first time this season.

“I liked the efficiency of the day," Riley said. "There was one off side, one false start and I don’t know how many plays. Our goal going in was getting our [first string] and our [second string] 25 reps, about a quarter of [a] football game [and] we did that.  Then we let the newer, younger guys get in for awhile. We made sure all three quarterbacks got a shot and that was good. I think they all did some good things, and I think overall we got accomplished what we wanted to.”

Additionally, Riley commented on the progress of the defensive line and the offensive line.

“I think for sure our defensive line is on the rise," Riley said. "We need a lot of work to get game ready and be a factor in the games. We’ve got to continue to develop the ability to have pass pressures in that picture. I think overall they look solid, as does the [offensive] line. You know now this is a new interior. One experienced player moved positions (Dylan Utter), and [we have] two new guards. I think these guys are going to be good, but obviously they don’t have it all down and we got to continue to work all that.”

Riley also spoke highly about true freshman running back, Tre Bryant.

“Tre has done nothing but impress us," Riley said. "He’s smart, he’s tough, and he’s fast. He’s got good vision. He has not blinked when we put him in with the other guys. I don’t know what we are going to do with him. It’s a tough one, I think he can play but I don’t know. I think our back situation is pretty good so I don’t want to make it cloudy or be unfair to him. So I don’t know yet [if he will redshirt or not].”

Riley announced that Tanner Lee will have two years of playing eligibility left, but will sit out this year after transferring from Tulane.

Riley also addressed the status of freshman linebacker Greg Simmons who was injured toward the conclusion of Saturday’s scrimmage. Riley said Simmons had neck pain but had “good movement, was coherent and answering questions.” Simmons was taken to a local hospital for precautionary X-rays.

The Huskers have tomorrow off, before resuming practice again on Monday.
