Six Nebraska swimmers are ready to hit the water for the U.S. Swimming Trials at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, June 26-July 3.
"We're obviously excited to have a good group headed to Omaha to compete and represent Nebraska at the Trials," Nebraska Coach Pablo Morales said. "Our swimmers have been training hard and are thrilled to be a part of this great event."
On the women's side, the action starts Sunday at 10 a.m., with the 100-meter butterfly, which will feature Nebraska's Taryn Collura. The 2016 senior from Phoenix, Ariz., earned her qualification in the event at last week's Omaha Cup at the CenturyLink Center. The semifinals of the 100 fly are set for Sunday's second session, which begins at 6:45 p.m. The finals in the event are scheduled for Monday at 6:45 p.m.
Omahan Erin Oeltjen will join teammate Morgan McCafferty as the next Huskers in the water at the trials on Monday morning with the preliminaries of the 100-meter backstroke leading off the day. Oeltjen, a two-time Nebraska captain, enters her senior season at Nebraska after winning a pair of individual state titles at Millard West High School. McCafferty will be a sophomore for the Huskers in 2016-17 after coming to Nebraska from Reynoldsburg, Ohio.
Semifinals for the 100 back are set for the final event of the evening session on Monday, with the 100 back finals set for Tuesday's 6:45 p.m. session.
Katt Sickle also will compete on Monday morning in Omaha. The senior-to-be from Grain Valley, Mo., will swim in the preliminaries of the 400-meter freestyle, which is set to be the final event of Monday's 10 a.m. session. Finals for the 400 free are set for Monday night.
No Huskers are scheduled to compete Tuesday morning, and Oeltjen or McCafferty would need to advance to finals in the 100 back for any Huskers to be in the pool at Tuesday night's session. Big Red swimmers will not be in the water on Wednesday, June 29.
Jordan Ehly will restart the trials for the Huskers on Thursday morning with her appearance in the 200-meter breaststroke. The Husker junior-to-be from Las Cruces, N.M., will try to advance to Thursday evening's 200 breast semifinal. Finals for the 200-meter breaststroke are the first scheduled event in Friday's 6:45 p.m. session.
Oeltjen will return to pool on Friday morning to compete in the 200-meter backstroke, which will be the final event of the 10 a.m. session at the CenturyLink Center. Semifinals of the 200 back will be the second women's race of the evening session, with the finals in the event scheduled to kick-off Saturday night's session in Omaha.
Two Huskers, Collura and Omahan Alexandra Bilunas, will be in the water for the final women's event - the 50-meter freestyle - with preliminaries opening the Saturday morning session on July 2. Semifinals of the 50 free will cap Saturday's evening session, and finals of the event will open the Sunday evening session.
