University Park, Pa. - The Nebraska softball team opened the 2016 Big Ten Tournament with an 8-0, five-inning victory over Purdue on Thursday at Nittany Lion Softball Park. With the win, the fifth-seeded Huskers advanced to play No. 4 seed Penn State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (Central).
Senior right-hander Emily Lockman fired a five-hit shutout to improve to 9-4 on the season. Lockman allowed only five base runners in 5.0 innings and did not allow a runner past first base.
With Lockman in control in the circle, Nebraska used a team approach to score eight runs, including six off first-team All-Big Ten pitcher Lilly Fecho (18-13), who took the loss. Nebraska drew eight walks and had eight hits. Seven of Nebraska's nine starters reached base multiple times as 12 of the Huskers' 21 at bats came with a runner on base.
Senior Mattie Fowler was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while sophomore Laura Barrow finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior Dawna Tyson was 0-for-1 but drew two walks and drove in pair of runs. Senior Kiki Stokes and junior MJ Knighten also walked twice, while senior Alicia Armstrong walked, was hit by two pitches, scored two runs and produced one RBI.
Nebraska loaded the bases with two outs in each of the first two innings but could not score. The Huskers were then retired in order in the third before exploding for five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Sophomore Madi Unzicker got the rally started with a one-out single. Barrow followed with another single before Stokes hit a changeup over the left fielder's head for an RBI double. Purdue then intentionally walked Knighten for the second straight plate appearance to load the bases. Armstrong brought Barrow home with the second run when she was plunked by a pitch. Fowler then lined a single to right center and the ball was bobbled by Maya Hughes, allowing both Stokes and Knighten to score on the play to make it 4-0.
Tyson drove in the fifth run of the inning with an RBI squeeze bunt after the home plate umpire ruled catcher Heather Knight bobbled the ball and called Armstrong safe.
Nebraska then scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early. Barrow led off with a single and Stokes and Armstrong both walked to load the bases with one out. Fowler then lined a single to right for her third hit of the day to score Barrow. Tyson followed with a four-pitch bases-loaded walk to score Stokes and make it 7-0. Sophomore Gina Metzler then picked up her third RBI of the year with an RBI ground out that scored Armstrong with the game-ending run.
Nebraska improved to 33-18 with the win. The Huskers' quarterfinal matchup with Penn State on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (Central) will air live on the Big Ten Network.
