Lincoln - The Nebraska softball team came back from a five-run deficit on Friday, rallying for a 13-8 victory over Wisconsin in the series opener at Bowlin Stadium.

The Huskers, who trailed by as many as five runs, were down 8-6 after three innings of play before scoring the final seven runs of the game. Three Wisconsin errors contributed to 11 unearned runs, but the Huskers earned their runs with eight two-out RBIs following the errors. Sophomore Austen Urness helped the comeback with a three-run homer in the fourth and a two-run home run in the sixth.

Urness was one of six Huskers who finished with two hits. She also recorded a career-high five RBIs while posting her first career multi-homer game. Senior Mattie Fowler finished 2-for-3 with a career-high four RBIs, while classmates Alicia Armstrong, Kiki Stokes and Dawna Tyson also had two hits. Junior MJ Knighten rounded out the six Huskers with multiple hits with a 2-for-4 day.

In the circle, senior Emily Lockman won her seventh straight home decision to improve to 8-3 on the year. Lockman allowed only one run in 5.1 innings of relief. Sophomore Kaylan Jablonski got the start and allowed seven runs in 1.2 innings.

With the win, Nebraska improved to 31-17 overall. The Huskers moved up in the Big Ten Conference standings by improving their league record to 12-8. Wisconsin fell to 27-22-1 overall and dropped to 10-10-1 in Big Ten play. Taylor-Paige Stewart took the loss, allowing seven runs - all unearned - in 4.1 innings of relief.

Nebraska jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Huskers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first on consecutive singles from Stokes, Knighten and Armstrong. Fowler then grounded a two-run single up the middle to give Nebraska a 2-0 lead. The Huskers still had runners at first and second with no outs but were unable to add to their lead.

Wisconsin then exploded for seven runs in the top of the second, despite recording only three hits. The Badgers barely got the ball out of the infield early in the frame, scoring their first run on a bunt single and their second run on a fielder's choice where no out was recorded. A sacrifice fly then put Wisconsin on top, 3-2, before a third walk of the inning loaded the bases. Samantha Arents then hit a grand slam to cap the seven-run explosion.

Nebraska used an error and consecutive singles from sophomore Laura Barrow and Stokes to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame. Knighten then lined an RBI single off the top of the shortstop's glove that scored sophomore Madi Unzicker to trim the lead to 7-3. Fowler then came through again with a two-out, two-run single through the left side that cut the lead to 7-5. Tyson followed with an RBI to pull the Huskers within one.

The Badgers then used a leadoff double to plate one run in the top of the third and take an 8-6 lead, but that would prove to be Wisconsin's final run of the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, an error, a walk and Tyson singled loaded the bases for Nebraska with only one out. Freshman Alyvia Simmons came on to pinch hit and lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Armstrong and pulled Nebraska within one at 8-7. Urness then launched a three-run homer to left to give the Huskers a 10-8 lead.

Urness then gave Nebraska insurance with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth after the Huskers had already scored off an error.

In a change from the original schedule, Nebraska and Wisconsin will now wrap up their series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
