DES MOINES, Iowa - The Nebraska track and field team continued competition at the Drake Relays on Friday at Drake Stadium.
Seth Derr led the Huskers with a second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 218-11 1/4 (66.73m) on his final attempt. James Nizich took third place, throwing 206-1 (62.81m).
Derr, a junior transfer from Bethany College in Kansas, was the champion at the 2014 Drake Relays competing for Bethany. He is ranked No. 3 in the Big Ten with two weeks until the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Lincoln.
"Today, the weather wasn't great, but I still threw pretty decent, about three meters less than my PR," Derr said. "The season's going pretty well. I've PR'd by about 10 feet so far, so hopefully it keeps going and I can do well at the Big Ten meet."
The women's 4x200 relay (Jasmine Barge, Quashira McIntosh, Chantel Duncan and Lakayla Harris) ran 1:37.09 to finish third overall with the fifth-fastest time in school history in the event.
Craig Driver and Steven Cahoy were both able to clear 16-10 3/4 (5.15m) in the pole vault, Driver on his first attempt and Cahoy on his second attempt. Driver tied for fourth, and Cahoy tied for sixth.
Jazmin McCoy and Kari Heck both jumped 19-4 1/4 (5.90m) in the long jump to tie for fifth. In the women's 400-meter hurdles, Jasmine Barge took fifth with a time of 58.86. Karolina Pahlitzsch, with a personal-best 59.15, placed ninth.
Tierney Lindner placed eighth in the high jump by clearing up to 5-6 (1.68m) without a miss.
The Huskers qualified for two relay finals in preliminary action on Friday. The men's 4x400 relay (Levi Gipson, Oliver Alexandre, Sam Bransby, Cody Rush) won their heat with a time of 3:07.22 to clinch a spot in tomorrow's final. The women's 4x100 relay (Jazmin McCoy, Lakayla Harris, Chanel Freeman, Quashira McIntosh) also qualified for Saturday's final with a time of 45.60, a new season best.
