Lincoln - The Nebraska softball team pounded out 10 hits against Big Ten ERA leader Lilly Fecho on Friday, but the Huskers could not come up with enough clutch hits in a 4-3 eight-inning loss to Purdue in game one of a doubleheader at Bowlin Stadium.
The Huskers out-hit the Boilermakers, 10-6, but Nebraska was just 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Nebraska had runners at first and second with one in out in the bottom of the seventh with a chance to win the game, and NU had runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the eighth down by one, but could not deliver a clutch hit.
Senior Dawna Tyson had two of Nebraska's three hits with runners in scoring position and both RBIs for the Huskers. Tyson finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while sophomore Laura Barrow was 2-for-3.
Despite allowing 10 hits, Fecho earned the win, improving to 18-10 on the year. In 7.1 innings, she allowed only three runs. Gina Snyder earned her second save by recording the final two outs on a game-ending double play.
Junior Cassie McClure (16-9) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) in a career-high 8.0 innings. McClure struck out five and had to work around a season-high four errors by the Husker defense.
The teams had combined for only two hits in the first three innings before Katie Harrison gave Purdue a 1-0 lead with a one-out solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.
Nebraska answered the run in the bottom of the frame. Junior MJ Knighten led off with a single before senior Mattie Fowler was hit by a one-out pitch. Tyson then grounded an RBI single up the middle to score Knighten with the tying run.
Purdue got the lead right back in the top of the fifth on a two-out, RBI double from Kristen Hoppman which scored Kaylah Hampton, who reached on a leadoff walk.
The Huskers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on another clutch hit from Tyson. Senior Alicia Armstrong led off the inning with a sharp single to center. Junior pinch runner Rachel Arthur moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Fowler, before Tyson doubled to the gap in left center to score Arthur with the tying run.
The game remained tied when Nebraska used a single by Barrow and a Purdue error to put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Huskers had two chances to score the winning run from second base but could not get a ball out of the infield.
Purdue then used a Husker error, a double and a two-run single to grab a 4-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning.
In the bottom of the eight, Nebraska loaded the bases with one out on three consecutive singles from Tyson, freshman Alyvia Simmons and McClure. An illegal pitch then scored Tyson and put Simmons on third base and sophomore pinch runner Madi Unzicker at second. Sophomore pinch hitter Austen Urness then lifted a fly ball to center field, where Sydney Pencek made the catch and made a perfect throw at home to get Simmons, who was attempting to tag up and score the tying run.
Nebraska aims for a doubleheader split in game two.
