NU 10th After Round One of Big Ten Championships

The Nebraska men’s golf team opened the Big Ten Championship with a 299 team score in Friday’s first round and sits in 10th place in the team race at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind. Action at the 7,242-yard, par-72 layout continues with the second round on Saturday and the third and final round on Sunday.

Coach Bill Spangler’s team had a balanced team attack on Friday with all five golfers posting scores between 73 and 77. Illinois leads the team standings after day one at 279, with Maryland (282), Iowa (285), Purdue (291) and Michigan State (291) rounding out the top five. Nebraska is just one shot behind Ohio State which sits in ninth place after a 298 score on Friday.

Individually, Nebraska was led by Jace Guthmiller who posted a one-over par 73 in the opening round. Guthmiller opened with an even-par 36 on Victoria’s back nine, Guthmiller’s opening nine in the tournament, and then posted a 37 on the front nine for the 73 total. Guthmiller is in a tie for 25th place.

Justin Jennings and Mike Colgate each fired 75s in the opening round, good for a tie for 37th place. Jennings began with a 40 on his first nine, but rallied with a 35 on his second nine, with two birdies against a single bogey. Colgate’s posted a similar round, opening with a 41 on the back nine, before posting a 2-under 34 on his second nine, including three birdies.

Sean Song posted a 76 in Friday’s round, with a 38 on each nine, and is in a tie for 42nd place. Jackson Wendling rounded out the Husker lineup with a 77 in round one and is tied for 50th place. Illinois’ Charlie Danielson and Joe Brooks of Maryland are tied for the individual lead after rounds of 68 on Friday.

Nebraska will once again go off the No. 10 tee in Saturday’s second round, with the Huskers’ tee times from 9:40 to 10:16 a.m. CT.
