Game Notes

Nebraska saw its three-game conference winning streak snapped...the Huskers fell to 3-8 vs. ranked teams this season...Nebraska was shut out for the fourth time this season...NU's one hit tied its season low...Alicia Armstrong saw her streak of 11 consecutive games reaching base safely end with an 0-for-3 day.

Minneapolis, Minn. - Minnesota ace Sara Groenewegen flashed her All-America form on Friday, leading the 24th-ranked Golden Gophers to a 6-0 victory over the Nebraska softball in the series opener at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.

Groenewegen fired a one-hit shutout and retired the final 18 Huskers. Mattie Fowler's second-inning single was the only base runner Groenewegen allowed all game. Groenewegen (22-5) also added nine strikeouts while throwing only 72 pitches in her 18th complete game of the year.

With the win, Minnesota improved to 31-12 on the season and remained in second place in the Big Ten Conference standings with a 12-3 record. Nebraska fell to 28-15 on the season and dropped to 9-6 in league play.

Junior right-hander Cassie McClure suffered her first loss in her last three Friday night starts. McClure (16-7) allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits in 5.0 innings. She allowed only one run over the first three innings before Minnesota scored twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth.

A runner's interference call helped Nebraska get out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the first, before Kayla Wenner gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the second.

The Golden Gophers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer from Sydney Fabian.

A pair of singles and a big Husker error helped Minnesota push the lead to 6-0 with a three-run fifth inning in which only one of the runs was earned.

That was more than enough support for Groenewegen, who tossed her fifth shutout of the season.

Nebraska and Minnesota meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m. in game two of the series.
