Huskers Defeated by No. 49 Drake

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska men's tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback to No. 49 Drake Tuesday evening at the Dillon Tennis Center.

The Huskers led 3-1 and won the first set in two other singles matches, but the Huskers (11-10) were unable to close out the match against the Bulldogs, who improved to 15-9 on the seson with the victory. 

"Pretty disappointing loss," said Head Coach Kerry McDermott. "Especially after getting the first set on five of the singles courts and then not closing out matches. The team put themselves into a position to win but our guys backed down under pressure tonight and it cost us the match. We have to put this one behind us and get ready in these next two days for a tough match against Indiana."

In doubles action, the duo of Dusty and Toby Boyer grabbed a solid 6-3 win over the Bulldogs' Bayo Philips and Ben Wood at No. 1. At No. 3 doubles, Andrew Dzulynsky and Ford Zitsch took a hit against Ben Stride and Calum MacGeoch, 6-2. Drake earned the doubles point with a win at No. 2 as Vinny Gillgespie and Ben Lott posted a 6-3 win over the Husker team of Marc Herrmann and Scott Elsass.

In singles competition, the Huskers had a promising start with Tomislav Antoljak winning his match at No. 6 over Tom Hands by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Toby Boyer came back with another victory at the No. 4 position, posting a 7-5, 6-3 win over Bayo Philips.

At No. 1 singles, No. 122 Dusty Boyer went on to defeat Lott 6-4, 7-6 (5), giving the Huskers a 3-1 lead.

Drake got on the board at No. 5 singles, as Ben Stride posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Zitsch. The Huskers had a golden opportunity at No. 3 singles between Andrew Dzulynsky and Drake's Calum MacGeoch. Dzulynsky won the first set, 6-2, but MacGeoch came back and posted a 6-4, 6-2 win to even the match at three each.

Drake clamed the victory at No. 2 singles, as  Vinny Gillespie posted a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1 win over Marc Herrmann.  

The Huskers return to the Dillon Tennis Center on Friday, Apr. 15 to compete against No. 70 Indiana at 7 p.m.
