Nebraska used a different starting lineup and different batting order for the 32nd time in 32 games...Maryland snapped an eight-game losing streak with the win...the Huskers have lost three straight Big Ten games, tying for their longest conference losing streak since joining the Big Ten in 2012...Alyvia Simmons hit her second home run in her first four career Big Ten games...Simmons had two hits and a walk...Kiki Stokes reached base in three of her four plate appearances, extending her streak to 13 consecutive games reaching base safely...Mattie Fowler went 0-for-4 to snap her career-long hitting streak at 11 games.

College Park, Md. - Maryland used a five-run fourth inning - with all five runs scoring with two outs - to defeat the Nebraska softball team, 7-4, on Friday in College Park, Md.

The Terrapins snapped an eight-game losing streak to pick up their first conference win of the year, improving to 8-23 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten play. Nebraska dropped its third straight conference game, falling to 20-12 overall and 1-3 in league action.

Things started well for Nebraska as freshman Alyvia Simmons gave the Huskers a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a two-out solo home run.

The Huskers then had runners at first and second with one out in the third following a single by sophomore Laura Barrow and a hit-by-pitch to senior Kiki Stokes. But junior MJ Knighten lined a ball directly to the right fielder for the second out before senior Alicia Armstrong struck out swinging two pitches after seeing a potential three-run homer go just foul down the left field line.

Maryland came back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. A leadoff double and a bunt single put Terrapins on first and third with no outs before Nebraska recorded a force out at second base and on the play, the runner from third came home and scored the tying run. An RBI double then gave Maryland the lead. The Terrapins had the bases loaded with only one out but senior Emily Lockman kept it a one-run deficit by escaping the jam out of the bullpen.

The Terrapins added five two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. Maryland had only a runner at first with two outs before producing five consecutive two-out hits.

The Husker offense finally got going in the top of the fifth, scoring twice to trim the lead to 7-3. Barrow, Stokes and Knighten all singled with one out to load the bases. Armstrong then lined a ball over the center fielder's head for a two-run single. Nebraska still had two on with one out but could not cut into the lead any further.

In the seventh, Stokes drew a leadoff walk and Knighten followed with a single and sophomore Kaylan Jablonski recorded an RBI double to center. Trailing 7-4, the Huskers had runners at second and third with only one out but a ground out and a base running error turned into an inning-ending double that left Simmons - who had already homered - as the tying run in the on deck circle.

Junior Cassie McClure (12-6) took the loss for Nebraska, allowing two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings. Lockman was tagged for five runs in 1.1 innings, while Jablonski tossed the final 2.1 innings and did not allow an earned run, giving up only a single while striking out three.

Offensively, Simmons finished 2-for-3 with a walk and her third home run of the year. Barrow and Knighten also had a pair of hits, while Stokes was 1-for-1 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Armstrong was the only Husker to drive in multiple runs, as she finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Nebraska hopes to snap its conference losing streak on Saturday when the Huskers and Terrapins play game two of their three-game series at 1 p.m. (Central).
