Game Notes

Nebraska (11-4) lost to an unranked opponent for just the second time this season...the attendance of 1,308 marked the largest crowd for a home opener in the history of Bowlin Stadium, which dates back to 2002...Cassie McClure tallied multiple hits for the second straight game...McClure struck out the side in the top of the seventh.

Lincoln, Neb. - The 23rd-ranked Nebraska softball team was unable to complete a second straight comeback against Wichita State on Saturday, as the Shockers shut out the Huskers, 2-0, in game two of a doubleheader in front of 1,308 fans at Bowlin Stadium.

The Huskers (11-4) trailed 2-0 before plating their first run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nebraska had the tying runner on third base with one out after scoring its first run, but the Huskers were unable to tie the game. NU was just 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position in the game and twice failed to score a runner from third base and fewer than two outs.

Sophomore right-hander Kaylan Jablonski (2-2) took the loss, allowing two runs in 5.2 innings. Junior Cassie McClure pitched the final 1.1 innings and did not allow a run while striking out three.

Jenni Brooks (5-1) earned the win for Wichita State, which improved to 9-7 on the year. Brooks allowed only one run in a complete-game effort.

Nebraska left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning but neither team mounted much offense after that until the top of the fourth inning, when a bloop one-out double set up an RBI single from Wichita State's Liz Broyles.

The Huskers had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the frame with runners on first and third with one out, but Wichita State escaped the jam with an inning-ending double play.

Wichita State then doubled its lead in the top of the sixth when Paige Luellen lined the first pitch of the inning over the fence in center.

The Huskers finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. McClure singled with one out before Jablonski doubled to left. With runners on second and third, senior Mattie Fowler hit a grounder to second and Wichita State elected to throw home, but sophomore pinch runner Madi Unzicker eluded the tag. Down 2-1, the Huskers had runners on first and third with one out but were unable to tie the game.

McClure struck out the side around a two-out single in the top of the seventh to give the Huskers a chance in the bottom of the seventh. Junior MJ Knighten reached on a two-out error to give Nebraska life, but Mackenzie Wright made a diving play on a hard-hit grounder down the third-base line and got the benefit of the doubt on a bang-bang play at first base to end the game.

Nebraska and Wichita State wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
