Nebraska Drops Tight Match to Ranked Cornell

Lincoln - Marc Herrmann notched a victory at the No. 2 singles spot, but the Nebraska men's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 65 Cornell on Saturday at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.

Cornell gained control of the match with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. Nebraska's No. 2 doubles pair of  Herrmann and Scott Elsass suffered a 6-2 loss to Cornell's Colin Sinclair and David Volfson.

At No. 3 doubles, NU's Andrew Dzulynsky and Ford Zitsch took a 6-3 setback to the Big Red's Stefan Vinti and Dylan Brown.

With the doubles point secure, play was halted at No. 1 doubles, where Huskers Dusty and Toby Boyer were locked in a 5-5 deadlock with Bernardo Casares and Chris Vrabel. 

In singles competition, Herrmann responded with a 6-1, 6-2 sweep of Cornell's Sinclair at No. 2. 

However, Dzulynsky struggled in a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Vrabel at the No. 4 singles position to put Cornell up 2-1.

The Ivy League's Big Red gained a 3-1 edge with Karlo Lozic's 7-5, 6-1 win over Zitsch at No. 6.

Husker freshman Tomislav Antoljak was in position to narrow Cornell's lead to 3-2 by racing to a 6-1 first set win over Vinti at No. 5. However, Vinti responded with a pair of dominant sets, rallying for a 6-1 win in the second set before closing out the decisive fourth point for Cornell at the No. 5 spot with a 6-0 win in the third set.

In addition to having their doubles match halted, the Boyer brothers also did not finish their singles matches after Cornell clinched victory.

At No. 1 singles, Dusty Boyer opened with a 7-5 win in the first set over Volfson and was knotted at 4-4 in the second set when the team match ended. 

At No. 3 singles, Toby Boyer also claimed the first set, 6-2, before falling 7-6 in the second set to Casares. 

Following the battle of the Big Reds in Lincoln, the Huskers hit the road to take on the Omaha Mavericks. Doubles play in Omaha begins at 7 p.m.
