Huskers Tie for Ninth in Hawaii

Honolulu - Morgan Smejkal shot a 75 while Haley Thiele, Cassidy Stelzmiller and Audrey Judd all carded scores of 76 to help the Nebraska women's golf team to a tie for ninth at the 16-team Dr. Donnis Thompson Hawaii Invitational on Wednesday. 

Nebraska got consistent play from top to bottom in the lineup to notch a 303 in the final round on the par-72, 6,099-yard layout of the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course. The Huskers used their best round of the tournament to move up two spots over the final 18 holes. Nebraska finished with a three-round score of 914 (305-306-303).

The Huskers matched Idaho (305-305-304-914) in the final team standings, while moving ahead of UMKC (303-305-307-916) on the tournament's final day.

Oklahoma State won the team title by tiebreaker over Texas A&M. OSU posted a 291 on Wednesday to finish at 860, while the Aggies erased the Cowgirls' seven-shot lead heading into the final round with a 284. The defending champion Cowgirls won the tiebreaker, while Pepperdine finished third at 864 after producing a final-round 288.

Texas A&M's Thanya Pattamakijsak earned individual medalist honors after scorching the Kane'ohe Klipper course with a final-round 67 to finish at 208. Pattamakijsak won the title by three strokes over teammate Bianca Fabrizio and OSU's Maddie McCrary.

Thiele, a freshman from Wahoo, Neb., led the Huskers in the final individual standings by tying for 31st at 226 (72-78-76). Stelzmiller, a senior from Placerville, Calif., finished just one stroke back of Thiele in a tie for 34th at 227 (74-77-76).

Smejkal, a senior from Columbus, Neb., gave Nebraska a trio of top-40 finishers in the 97-player field with a three-round score of 230 (80-75-75). Fellow senior Cassie Deeg tied for 54th with a 233 (79-76-78), while the sophomore Judd tied for 60th at 235 (80-79-76).

Sophomore Emily Gillman, who was playing as an individual outside the Husker lineup, fired a final-round 75 on Wednesday to finish in a tie for 77th at 244 (87-82-75). Junior Sarah Pravecek, also playing as an individual, added a 77 Wednesday to finish at 239 (84-78-77) in a tie for 69th.

Nebraska closes its regular-season spring schedule at the Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif., April 3-5.
