Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska football team practiced in full pads for just over two hours on Saturday in the Hawks Championship Center.
Head Coach Mike Riley spoke to the media afterwards about the first few practices of the spring.
"I think we've definitely made some progress football-wise, and not just in the last two days,” Riley said. “It's been fun to see a comfort level with our team over a period of time over this year to right now, and we're really excited about that."
When asked about the players that did not practice today, Riley said, "I think Stanley Morgan (Jr.) and Jordan Westerkamp had pulled groins after the second day, so that's where they are. Michael Rose-Ivey hyperextended his knee the other day, but he's going to be fine. He should be practicing next week. Stanley for sure should be practicing after spring break, and Jordan is to be determined."
Riley also spoke about his larger vision for the offense, saying, "It develops from personnel groups. Our game will be running the ball, bootlegs off the run, and play action off the run.”
In addition, Riley said he looks for Carlos Davis, Khalil Davis and other redshirts to play a key role this season.
"With Maliek (Collins) leaving and Vincent (Valentine) leaving, there's no question that we need some of those guys that redshirted to step up," Riley said. "The Davis twins are prime examples of that. We need them to be ready to play. Can they win starting jobs? I don't know that yet. They should compete hard to do that."
Riley added, "I'm excited about the vibe that we have with this team. I think these guys have been training hard and are excited to play football."
Nebraska’s annual Red-White Spring Game is set for Saturday, April 16 at Memorial Stadium, with kickoff at 1 p.m. Tickets are available at Huskers.com, or by calling the Nebraska Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-8 BIG RED.
