Game Notes

Nebraska finished the Mary Nutter Classic with a 2-2 record against a schedule that featured three of the top nine teams in the NFCA top-25 poll...the Huskers posted a .500 record for just the second time in seven trips to the Mary Nutter Classic...Nebraska has lost a seventh-inning lead in two of its three losses this season...Dawna Tyson moved to second base in the bottom of the fifth inning, marking her first career action at the position.

Cathedral City, Calif. - The team with the last at bat won in a back-and-forth battle between the Washington and Nebraska softball teams on Sunday, as the seventh-ranked Huskies earned a 6-5 nine-inning victory over the Huskers.

Washington led 3-0 entering the seventh inning, but Nebraska rallied. Junior MJ Knighten put the Huskers on the board with an RBI ground out before senior Alicia Armstrong - who was down to her last strike - launched a two-out, go-ahead three-run home run.

The Huskies were then down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh before Courtney Gano tied the game with a solo home run.

The game then moved to extra innings, with each team beginning the inning with a runner on second base in accordance with the tiebreaker rule. The Huskers took a 5-4 lead when senior Mattie Fowler put down a perfect bunt for an RBI single in the top of the eighth. Nebraska still had runners on first and third with only one out but failed to tack on an insurance run.

That loomed large in the bottom of the eighth when Nebraska got two quick outs, but Washington was able to move its runner to third base. The speedy Kelly Burdick then tapped a ground ball to the right side that she was able to beat out for a game-tying, RBI infield single.

Nebraska then failed to score its runner in the ninth before All-American Ali Aguilar grounded a one-out RBI single up the middle to give Washington the walk-off win. Aguilar's single was the only ball the Huskies hit out of the infield in extra innings.

With the win, Washington improved to 11-3 on the season. The Huskers, who have held a seventh-inning lead in two of their three losses, fell to 10-3 on the year with a pair of losses to top-10 teams.

Junior Cassie McClure (5-2) took the loss, although she was not charged with an earned run in her 1.1 innings. Senior Emily Lockman earned the start and allowed three runs in 5.0 innings, while sophomore Kaylan Jablonski surrendered one run in 2.0 innings.

Nebraska out-hit Washington, but the Huskers struggled with timely hits until Armstrong's seventh-inning home run. Nebraska was just 5-for-21 with runners in scoring position. Taran Alvelo (6-2) picked up the win in relief for the Huskies, allowing only a single in 2.0 shutout innings.

After playing its first 13 games on the road, the Huskers host their first home games of the season next weekend. Nebraska takes on Wichita State in a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday at Bowlin Stadium. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. with Sunday's finale scheduled for 1 p.m.
