Stelzmiller Closes with Career Best at Westbrook

Cassidy Stelzmiller fired a career-best one-under-par 71 to lead the Nebraska women's golf team to a final-round 292 on Monday at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz.

Stelzmiller, a fifth-year senior from Placerville, Calif., finished with a three-round total of 224 on the par-72, 6,269-yard layout of the Vistas Course at Westbrook Village Golf Club. Her tie for 56th individually helped the Huskers to a three-round total of 886. Nebraska tied for 13th in a 15-team field.

Fellow fifth-year senior Morgan Smejkal added a final-round 73 to match her career-best three-round total of 218. Smejkal (Columbus, Neb.) opened the two-day, 54-hole event with rounds of 72 and 73 on Sunday. She was Nebraska's top overall finisher, tying for 30th in the 86-player field.

Freshman Haley Thiele (Wahoo, Neb.) contributed a 73 of her own in the final round to match senior Cassie Deeg (Hugo, Minn.) with a three-round score of 223 in a tie for 53rd place. Deeg settled for a 76 for the second straight round after opening the tournament with a one-under-par 71.

Sophomore Audrey Judd (Olathe, Kan.) rounded out Nebraska's scoring four on Monday with a three-over-par 75 to finish in a tie for 79th individually at 231. Sarah Pravecek, a junior from Omaha, Neb., completed the Husker contingent in Arizona with a final-round 77 to finish in a tie for 77th while playing as an individual outside the NU five-golfer lineup.

Oregon claimed the team title with a three-round total of 854, including a 287 on Monday. The Ducks held off runner-up Ohio State by five strokes. The Buckeyes fired a 284 in the final round to finish at 859. Kansas State took third (861), UNLV finished fourth (863) and SMU (864) stormed to fifth with Monday's best round at 282.

Wisconsin's Brooke Ferrell and San Diego State's Emma Henrickson shared medalist honors. Both carded final rounds of 69 to finish the 54 holes at five-under-par 211. Connie Jaffrey (Kansas State), Erin Harper (Indiana), Cathleen Santoso (Oregon), Jenny Haglund (SMU) and Carolina Inglis (Oregon) finished in a five-way tie for third just one shot back at 212.

Nebraska will take nearly three weeks off from competition before returning to Arizona for the Clover Cup. The Huskers head to Mesa, March 11-13.
