Huskers Fall to Tigers, 19-14

Lincoln, Neb. – No. 11 Nebraska (11-6, 5-4 Big Ten) led 10-6 at the halfway point against No. 6 Missouri, but fell by a 19-14 margin during the NWCA National Duals Championship Series at the Devaney Center on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Jake Sueflohn, ranked fourth at 149 pounds by InterMat, knocked off previously unbeaten No. 3 Lavion Mayes, 4-1, in tiebreaker-1. The pair traded escapes in the second and third periods after a scoreless opening stanza.

After a scoreless sudden victory period, Mayes started on bottom first in the tiebreaker and failed to escape. Sueflohn escaped from bottom and added a takedown en route to his 24th win of the season.

No. 19 Tyler Berger (157) and No. 19 Collin Jensen (HWT) each notched major decisions, while 13th-ranked Eric Montoya (133) won by decision. Berger defeated Le’Roy Barnes by a 10-2 margin in the fifth match of the afternoon.

Jensen won the final bout of the dual, 9-1, over Cody Johnston. Montoya topped No. 15 Zach Synon, 4-0, in the second match.

All six of Nebraska’s losses came against ranked Tigers. No. 10 Tim Lambert (125), No. 20 Anthony Abidin (141), No. 13 Austin Wilson (165), No. 17 Micah Barnes (174) and No. 9 TJ Dudley (184) each fell by decision, while No. 12 Aaron Studebaker (197) lost by major decision to No. 2 J’den Cox.

The Huskers return to action March 5-6 for the Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, Iowa.
