Thiele Leads Huskers in Final Round at Stanford

Stanford, Calif. - Freshman Haley Thiele led Nebraska with a final-round 75 to help the Husker women's golfers move up one spot to 10th in a talented 13-team field at the Peg Barnard Invitational on Sunday.

Senior Morgan Smejkal added a 76 to her opening-round 74 to produce Nebraska's top individual finish in a tie for 27th at 150. Senior Cassie Deeg added a 76 of her own on Sunday to climb into a tie for 72nd at 155 in the 70-player field.

Senior Cassidy Stelzmiller and sophomore Audrey Judd each added rounds of 81 on Sunday to wrap up the Huskers' stay at Stanford.

Washington stormed to the team title with an impressive final-round 280 on the par-71, 6,084-yard Stanford Golf Course. Individual medalist Wenyung Keh led the Huskies with a tournament-best final-round of 66, while teammate Ying Luo added a 69 on Sunday to tie for runner-up honors. Keh finished at 138, while Luo closed at 139. 

Washington posted a two-round total of 571 to defeat the hosts from Stanford, who notched back-to-back rounds of 287 to finish three strokes back at 574.

Nebraska, which entered the tournament at No. 104 in the GolfStat rankings, defeated No. 47 UC Davis, No. 59 Denver and No. 87 Nevada in the final standings.

The Huskers return to action next weekend at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz. The tournament starts Sunday, Feb. 21, before concluding on Monday, Feb. 22.
