Palm Coast, Fla. - The Nebraska men’s golf team concluded the Big Ten Match Play Championship on Saturday, taking one of their two matches. NU fell short to Minnesota, but defeated Rutgers 5-1 in the ninth place match.
The Huskers faced Minnesota in the third and final round robin round in the morning. NU fell short by a 3.5 to 2.5 margin against the Gophers. Juniors Mike Colgate and Justin Jennings each gave the Huskers a point, each defeating their opponents 4 & 3.
Freshman Jace Guthmiller added half a point to the Big Red’s score, competing against Jose Mendez in a matchup that concluded in a tie.
Sean Song made it to the final hole against Runar Arnorsson, but fell short as Arnorsson won, 1 Up. Dylan McCabe was defeated by a 2 & 1 margin after 17 holes and Jackson Wendling dropped his match 3 & 2.
The Huskers faced Rutgers in the ninth place in the afternoon. NU defeated the Scarlet Knights 5 to 1. Colgate and Jennings both earned their second victory of the day, each winning by a 5 & 4 margin.
Jackson Wendling was the next Husker to bring in a point for the Big Red in the afternoon. Wendling defeated Jack Panagos, 3 & 2. Sean Song also brought home a point, defeating Jonathan Chang, 2 & 1.
Jace Guthmiller and Joel Sneed both took their matches to the final hole. Guthmiller defeated Chase Wheatley, 1 Up, but Sneed fell short to Toks Pedro on the final hole.
Michigan State won the Big Ten Match Play Championship, defeating Northwestern, 5-1. Tape delayed TV coverage will air on the Big Ten Network on Feb. 27th at 12:00 p.m. (ET).
The Huskers return to action Feb.19-21, for the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif.
