Wichita, Kan. - The Nebraska men's tennis team claimed a victory against New Mexico State on Saturday, defeating the Aggies, 6-1, in Wichita, Kan.
One day after an extremely close loss at No. 67 Wichita State, the Huskers bounced back against New Mexico State to improve to 4-3 on the season, including a 4-0 mark vs. unranked opponents.
The Huskers started competition off strong by gaining the doubles point. NU saw wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Dusty and Toby Boyer took on Stahinja Trecakov and Christofer Goncalves at No. 1 doubles and earned a close 7-6 victory. Marc Herrmann and Tomislav Antoljak secured the doubles point at the No. 2 spot, where they also posted a tight 7-6 win.
Nebraska had an excellent day in singles competition as well, winning five of the six matches. At No. 1 singles, Dusty Boyer won 6-0, 6-1 over Trecakov. Herrmann was victorious in the No. 2 spot, winning a close first set against Goncalves, 6-4, before blanking Goncalves, 6-0, in the second set.
Toby Boyer grabbed another win for the Huskers at No. 3 singles against Nicholas Springer in a swift 6-1, 6-0 mark. At No. 5 singles, Andrew Dzulynsky lost his first set to Mauri Benitez, but was able to come back and finish the remaining two sets 6-3, 10-3. Ford Zitsch was also a winner on Sunday, earning a 6-2, 7-5 win over Enrique Asmar at No. 6 singles.
Antoljak suffered Nebraska's lone singles loss at the No. 5 spot, losing a very competitive match to Stijn de Haan, 6-4, 7-6.
Following their fourth win of the month, the Huskers will return home next Saturday to host Creighton at 6 p.m. at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. Admission into the match is free.
