Palm Coast, Fla. - The Nebraska men’s golf team dropped a narrow match to Iowa in the first round of the Big Ten Match Play Championship before falling to Northwestern on Friday.
Iowa managed to defeat NU by a 3.5 to 2.5 margin at Hammock Beach Resort’s Conservatory Course. Junior Justin Jennings and freshman Sean Song both managed to win their respective matches. Jennings defeated Raymond Knoll by a 3 & 2 margin through sixteen holes. Song captured a victory by a 2 & 1 margin versus Sam Meuret.
Junior Mike Colgate battled all the way to the end against Big Ten co-champion Carson Schaake, with the match being halved.
Freshman Jace Guthmiller reached the final hole with his opponent but fell to Matthew Walker, 1 UP. Jackson Wendling and Dylan McCabe both dropped their respective matches 3 & 1 through 17 holes.
Wendling and Guthmiller each picked up victories against the Wildcat’s in the second round. Wendling took down Ryan Lumsden, 6 & 5, while Guthmiller won by a 2 & 1 margin against Sam Triplett.
Colgate and Sneed both fell short in their matches by a 3 & 2 margin in the afternoon. Jennings lost his match against Joshua Jamieson, 4 & 3. Song dropped a 5 & 3 match to Pete Griffith.
The Huskers return to action Saturday at 7:45 a.m. (ET) for their matchup against Minnesota to determine whom they will face in the final round at 1:15 p.m. (ET). Scoring and updates will be available on BirdieFire and on Twitter @B1GMatchPlay.
