Huskers Shoot for Upset of No. 32 Shockers

Nebraska opens another exciting home weekend at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center by playing host to No. 32 Wichita State on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The red hot Huskers (6-0) have opened the season with six consecutive victories in their first season at the Dillon Tennis Center, including a 4-3 win over No. 71 Wyoming last Sunday. The win over the Cowgirls capped a perfect 3-0 weekend for the Huskers, including a 7-0 sweep of UMKC and a 6-1 win over Creighton on Friday, Feb. 5.

Senior Maggy Lehmicke has led the Huskers with a 5-1 record at No. 1 singles this spring, while junior Mary Hanna has contributed a 5-1 singles mark of her own, while adding a perfect 6-0 doubles mark at the No. 2 spot with her partner Vasanti Shinde this spring. Shinde, a freshman from Pune, India, also has pitched in a 5-1 singles record this spring.

No. 32 Wichita State opened the week with a 5-2 with its only losses coming at No. 10 Texas A&M (Jan. 24) and No. 10 Oklahoma State (Jan. 30) in back-to-back matches.

The Shockers bounced back with a 6-1 win over North Texas in their first home match of the season, before facing BYU and Missouri on Thursday in Columbia, Mo.

In a highly competitive non-conference series, Nebraska owns an 18-12 advantage head-to-head against the Shockers.

Following Saturday morning’s match with the Huskers, Wichita State will face Colorado State at 5 p.m.

The Huskers, who are in the midst of a 13-match season-opening home stand, close the weekend with an 11 a.m. clash with Colorado State on Sunday. The Rams enter the weekend with a 2-2 mark after defeating Colorado State-Pueblo and Metro State last weekend in Fort Collins. The Rams opened their season with setbacks to Seattle and Grand Canyon.

Nebraska owns an 18-0 all-time record against Colorado State.
