Norman, Okla. --- Despite posting the second-best team score in school history, three top-three individual finishes and a number of personal-best scores, the No. 6 Nebraska men’s gymnastics team (5-4, 0-1) fell to the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners (8-0) on Saturday night by a score of 428.700 – 447.450.
Nebraska began the competition on pommel horse. All-American Ethan Lottman led the team on the event with a 14.75, earning second-place overall on pommel horse. Jordan King posted a solid 14.45 and Kyle King added support with his score of 14.05. Anton Stephenson’s routine was awarded a 13.85. Ryan Irick and Antonio Castro both overcame a fall to post a 12.600 and 12.900, respectively. The team finished with a score of 70.000.
The Huskers moved to floor for the second rotation. Andrew Zymball started the team off with a 13.40, followed by Chris Stephenson and Connor Adamsick who each notched a 14.75. K. King earned a 14.20 and A. Stephenson posted a career-best score of 15.00. Austin Epperson ended the event on a strong note with a 14.70. As a team, the Huskers scored 73.40 on the event.
On vault, Connor Adamsick started the Huskers off strong with a personal-best score of 14.70. The trend continued when senior Sam Chamberlain followed with a career-high score of 15.05. The senior tied for third place overall on the event. A. Stephenson tied his career best when he scored 14.90. K. King earned 14.65 for his routine, while Alex Magsam posted a 14.30. Daniel Leal added 12.75. The team’s final score on vault was 73.60, the highest score of the season on the event.
At the halfway point, the Huskers trailed Oklahoma by a score of 217.000 – 223.100.
Ryan Irick started on still rings for Nebraska and earned a score of 13.35. Heath Anderson, in his college debut, posted a 13.00. Next, J. King shattered his previous personal-best score with a 14.10 and Magsam stuck his landing, earning a 14.35. Leal’s routine got him a 13.50, while Epperson ended the event with a 14.45. Nebraska ended with a team score of 69.75 on still rings.
NU competed on high bar next. Epperson was the leader on the event for the Huskers with a 14.65. Castro added supported with his score of 14.40. C. Stephenson posted a personal-high score of 14.35. A. Stephenson and Leal added a 13.80 and 13.65, respectively, while J. King earned a 12.25 his first time competing on the event. Nebraska ended with a 70.85.
The team finished the night on parallel bars with a score of 71.10. A. Stephenson was the top performer on the event with 14.85. Leal followed closely behind with 14.70. C. Stephenson and Epperson earned 14.35 and 14.00, respectively. K. King clinched a 13.20 with his performance, while Sanjaya Roy scored 12.75 in his first appearance of the year for the Huskers.
A. Stephenson was the team’s only all-around competitor. He finished with a score of 85.75, earning second place.
The Huskers are off until Feb. 27 when the team travels to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes. In the meantime, select members of the team will compete at the Winter Cup in Las Vegas on Feb. 18 and Feb. 20.
