Huskers Fall to No. 2 Iowa, 21-11

Lincoln, Neb. – All-American TJ Dudley (184) pinned No. 7 Sammy Brooks, but No. 11 Nebraska (9-4, 3-4 Big Ten) fell to No. 2 Iowa, 21-11, in front of a school-record 3,952 fans at the Devaney Center on Sunday afternoon.

Dudley’s win, which he earned in the eighth bout of the dual, marked his 14th win of the year as he improves to 6-2 against ranked opponents. Dudley, the No. 11 wrestler by InterMat, took down Brooks in the opening stanza and pinned the Hawkeye in 1:40.

No. 20 Anthony Abidin (141) and No. 14 Austin Wilson (165) also collected wins for the Huskers. Abidin notched a 7-6 decision over Topher Carton in the third match of the dual to cut Iowa’s lead to 6-3. Wilson defeated Patrick Rhoads by a 2-0 decision to improve to 18-4 this season.

No. 9 Tim Lambert (125) fell to second-ranked Thomas Gilman in the opening match, 11-4, before No. 14 Eric Montoya (133) dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 3 Cory Clark. In the lone top-five matchup of the day, No. 5 Jake Sueflohn (149) lost to No. 2 Brandon Sorensen, 6-5.

At 157 pounds, No. 17 Tyler Berger nearly came from behind against 16th-ranked Edwin Cooper, Jr., but fell by a 7-6 margin. Nebraska was penalized one point for unsportsmanlike conduct after the match to go into halftime trailing 12-2.

Nebraska also suffered narrow decision losses to ranked Hawkeyes at 174, 197 and heavyweight. No. 16 Micah Barnes (174) lost to No. 12 Alex Meyer, 2-0. No. 15 Aaron Studebaker (197) fell to No. 3 Nathan Burak, 4-2. No. 18 Collin Jensen (HWT) dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 7 Sam Stoll.

The Huskers compete next against Illinois (Feb. 5) and NC State (Feb. 6) at the Devaney Center. Both duals will be streamed on BTN Plus (subscription required).
