Head Coach Dan Kendig and the Nebraska women’s gymnastics team released its 2016 schedule Wednesday, with six home events at the Devaney Center, including the Big Ten Championships on March 19.
Nebraska returns six letterwinners from last year’s squad, including seniors Hollie Blanske and Madison McConkey. Juniors Jennie Laeng and Ashley Lambert also return for the Big Red, as well as sophomores Danielle Breen and Grace Williams.
Kendig is impressed with the strength of the competition the Huskers will face in 2016.
“The Big Ten seems to get more challenging,” Kendig said. “I think it’s a challenging schedule with a good mixture of home and away. The highlights of our schedule have to be our home events. Our team is going to be exciting to watch with six new freshmen and six solid returners. We are looking for the fans to come out and support us as a team and improve on the things from the past.”
Nebraska’s home slate is highlighted by the Double Dual on Jan. 23, with both the Husker men’s and women’s teams competing. The Husker women will face Big Ten foe Rutgers, while the Husker men will take on Air Force.
Also included in the home schedule is the annual Tumble N’ Rumble on Feb. 12, a night of gymnastics and wrestling in one event. The Husker gymnasts will face Minnesota in a dual meet, while the Husker wrestlers take on Northwestern.
Nebraska’s season kicks off with the Huskers traveling to Tempe, Ariz., to take on Arizona State and Bowling Green in a meet on Jan. 8. The Huskers will face Penn State in University Park, Pa., Jan. 19, before returning home for the Double Dual. A home contest against defending Big Ten champion Michigan on Jan. 29 rounds out the month of January.
The Huskers hit the road to face Iowa in a Big Ten meet on Feb. 6, before returning home for the Tumble N’ Rumble.
NU battles non-conference foes Iowa State, NC State and Wisconsin-La Crosse in Ames, Iowa, on Feb. 21.
The Huskers return home on Feb. 27 for the Master’s Classic, a non-conference event featuring Northern Illinois, Sacramento State and Bridgeport.
Senior Night will take place on March 6, as Blanske and McConkey will be honored prior to a non-conference dual meet with Utah State.
Nebraska will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for one of two Big Ten Five Team meets, with the Huskers competing against conference rivals Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State and Ohio State on March 12.
