Huskers Advance in ITA Central Regionals

Stillwater, Okla. – After traveling to the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma Wednesday, Oct 15., the Nebraska women’s tennis team delivered a successful day at the ITA Central Regional Championships with a combined total of eight wins.

The Huskers began with main doubles draw play at 9 a.m. taking on various opponents from 23 schools across the region.

Doubles pair Maggy Lehmicke (Kirkland, Wash.) and Lisa Andersson (Varberg, Sweden) claimed Nebraska’s first victory of the morning with an 8-4 win over Arkansas State’s Victoria Roberts and Julie Gauguery. The Husker pair then swiftly moved through the bracket, claiming another 8-4 win over Wichita State’s Luca Pump and Tanaporn Thongsing.

Junior Mary Hanna (Saline, Mich.) and freshman Vasanti Shinde (Pune, India) united in doubles action producing the next two wins for the Huskers. The duo first snagged an 8-5 win over Drake’s Maddie Johnson and Tess Herder, before securing their place in Friday's main bracket by defeating St. Louis University’s Eleonore and Verginie Tchakarova, 8-4.

In singles action, Mary Hanna (Saline, Mich.) captured a solid win over South Dakota State's Fifon Davies 6-4, 6-2. Hanna continues to the main draw bracket and two more rounds of singles play on Friday. Also claiming a victory over South Dakota State was Sydney Harlow (Omaha, Neb.), who pulled a strong 6-3, 6-1 finish over the Jackrabbits' Tiffany Filipovich. 

Following in suit, junior Lisa Andersson (Varberg, Sweden) secured her third win of the day by picking up a third set to win her match against Drake's Adrienne Jensen, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. 

The last of the Big Red wins came from afternoon singles action, where senior Maggy Lehmicke claimed another win. This time the Kirkland, Wash., native pulled a 7-5, 6-0 win over UMKC’s Allie Schulte to advance to the second round of main singles draw starting Friday afternoon.

Moving to the consolation bracket Oct. 16 are doubles pairs Gould/Harlow and Maddox-Herr/Matysova, while Mackenna Maddox-Herr, Elizabeth Gould and Katernia Matysova will be competing in singles action on the consolation bracket.

Matches are again set to take place on all 18 of the Greenwood’s courts on Friday, Oct. 16, with main draw action scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

Action for the Big Red will move indoors for singles and doubles play again against regional opponents on Saturday, Oct. 17 through Monday, Oct. 19, with consolation matches taking places outdoors.

The crowned central region champion will receive a bid into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at Flushing Meadows, N.Y., in November.
