Huskers Fall to Top-Ranked West Virginia

Colorado Springs, Colo. — For the second day in a row, the Nebraska rifle team produced strong air rifle performances, including a 594 by freshman Hannah Virga.  However, the Huskers were defeated on Sunday by No. 1 West Virginia by a score of 4,714-4,654.

The Huskers fell behind after smallbore, getting outscored by the Mountaineers 2,290-2,338.  Rachel Martin was Nebraska’s highest scorer with 579.  However, the team made big strides in air rifle to help narrow the gap.  Virga was the top performer for Nebraska, followed by fellow freshman, Nina Radulovic, who tallied a 592 and Rachel Martin, who fired a 590.  The team’s final air rifle score was 2,364.

West Virginia was led by Michael Bamsey in smallbore and Garrett Spurgeon, Patrick Sunderman and Ginny Thrasher in air rifle. Bamsey finished with a 587 in smallbore while Spurgeon, Sunderman and Thrasher each scored 595 in air rifle.  The Mountaineers' final team air rifle score was 2,376.

Nebraska has a bye week, but is back in action when the team travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on Memphis on Oct. 24 and TCU on Oct. 25.  Both matches are set to begin at 8 am.
