* Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. passed for 129 yards in today’s game to increase his career passing total to 5,161. Armstrong moved up two spots to No. 3 on the NU career passing list in today’s game, surpassing Dave Humm (5,035 yards) and Joe Ganz (5,125 yards) on the career chart. * The 55-yard touchdown run by Andy Janovich was Nebraska’s longest scoring play of the 2015 season. It’s also the longest touchdown run by a Nebraska fullback since Tom Rathman scored on an 84-yard run against Colorado on Oct. 26, 1985. Rathman’s run is the 10th-longest touchdown run in school history. The Huskers’ previous long scoring play this season was earlier in today’s game, a 41-yard second-quarter touchdown pass from Tommy Armstrong Jr. to Alonzo Moore. Prior to today’s game, Nebraska’s longest scoring play of the season was a 22-yard pass from Armstrong to Moore against BYU. * Linebacker Marcus Newby recorded four pass breakups in today’s game, tying the Nebraska record for most breakups by a linebacker. Lincoln, Neb. - In a continuation of one of the longest stretches of close games in Nebraska football history, the Huskers watched Rafael Gaglianone's 46-yard field goal sail through the uprights in the north end zone with four seconds left to give Wisconsin a 23-21 win at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
The loss, Nebraska's fourth of the season on the opponent's final offensive play, dropped the Huskers to 2-4 and 0-2 in the Big Ten, while Wisconsin improved to 4-2 and 1-1 in the conference. It marked the seventh time in NU's past eight games dating to last season, that Nebraska's outcome has been decided by a single score.
Gaglianone's field goal, which followed his 39-yard miss that hit the right upright with 1:26 left in the game, spoiled a fourth-quarter comeback by the Huskers.
Trailing 20-14 after Gaglianone's 42-yard field goal with 6:17 left, Nebraska mustered an answer after Wisconsin had scored the first 13 points of the second half.
On 3rd-and-15 from the NU 20, Tommy Armstrong Jr. scrambled for a 16-yard gain to spark the offense. After a five-yard reception and a four-yard run by Terrell Newby, Armstrong handed the ball to Andy Janovich on a blast on 3rd-and-1. The senior hit the pile, bounced left and ran over a Wisconsin defender, before sprinting down the middle of the field 55 yards to paydirt. Janovich's huge run tied the score at 20 and electrified the nearly 90,000 Husker fans in the Sea of Red in the 344th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium.
Drew Brown's extra point put the Huskers back in front, 21-20, with 3:38 left after a six-play 75-yard drive that took 2:39.
Janovich finished with three carries for 59 yards on the day, matching Newby's 59 yards on 15 attempts for the team rushing lead. Armstrong added eight carries for 50 yards and a score to propel the Huskers to 196 rushing yards on the afternoon. Armstrong's seven-yard touchdown run tied the game at 7-7 with 2:40 left in the first half. Armstrong's run capped a 14-play, 77-yard drive that consumed 6:56 of the second quarter.
On a windy day against a tough Wisconsin secondary, Armstrong completed just 11-of-28 passes for 129 yards and a score - a 41-yard strike to Alonzo Moore that gave Nebraska a 14-7 halftime lead. NU's second scoring drive took just 1:29, quickly covering 62 yards in five plays.
Wisconsin outgained Nebraska, 469-325 in total offense on the day, as UW's Joel Stave completed 24-of-50 passes for 322 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown pass to Troy Fumagalli to open the scoring in the second quarter for Wisconsin. Fumagalli, who had two receptions for 31 yards on UW's game-winning drive, finished with seven catches for 60 yards on the day.
Stave's favorite target was Alex Erickson, who finished with seven receptions for 113 yards, while Robert Wheelwright added five catches for 81 yards.
Dare Ogunbowale led the Badger ground game with 18 carries for 117 yards, while Alec Ingold added eight carries for 14 yards, including a one-yard touchdown run that gave Wisconsin a 17-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. UW finished with 147 yards on the ground as a team.
Despite Wisconsin's yardage advantage, the Huskers appeared to have the game in hand when Gaglianone missed his second field goal of the game with 1:26 left. However, the Badgers had all three of their timeouts remaining, and forced the Huskers to a three-and-out while spending just 12 seconds on the game clock.
Wisconsin took over after Sam Foltz's 47-yard punt against the wind pushed the Badgers to their own 30 to start their final drive with 1:03 left. In 54 seconds, Stave moved UW to the NU 28 when Gaglianone booted the decisive field goal.
Nebraska returns to Big Ten road action next Saturday, when the Huskers travel to Minnesota to battle the Golden Gophers. Kick-off is set for 2:30 p.m.
